EDL not working?

alifftudm95 wrote on 9/21/2021, 6:22 AM

using VP19, latest build 361.

Seems like the EDL doesn't work at all, the moment I import into Davinci Resolve. It doesnt cut the baked clip base on edit point in VEGAS.

XML in VEGAS Pro where never really work. This is very very crucial cuz most of my post work involving with Colorist.

I figured it was only a matter of time before you noticed that video and posted about it... :)

No, I don't think that PRECONFORMED edl workflow works from Vegas, but here is an alternative:

1) "Render to new track" to create the "baked" file.

2) Cut the "baked" file up manually (with assistance of your original timeline below) or using Vegas scene detect.

3) Save, then delete original timeline to clean up the timeline.

4) Export FCP7 XML for Resolve

5) Import "baked" file and XML into Resolve.

I tested this and it works just like the Darren Mostin video. keep in mind that if you "bake in" dissolve transitions then you don't have access to the underlying media, but if you place a dissolve on top in Resolve then any differences in colour grading will typically blend nicely. Any changes in sizing, etc. done at this point would likely look a bit weird.

Also, XML from Vegas to Resolve DOES WORK, but you MUST HAVE CLIP SOURCE TIMECODE! I have done this hundreds of times, so I know it works. This is the better workflow IMO.

Alternatively, do your colour grading in Resolve, render the individual clips, and then bring those into your Vegas timeline using the "swap video clips" function.

@kinvermark I usually do offline and online edit, and send the edit to professional colorist. Mine if u screen record the whole XML process?

Here, sometimes the clip we received have no Source TC.

I am not set up to screen record, but I will look into it when I have the time. Are you asking about the "normal" XML export or the method I suggested for mimicking preconformed EDL?

Also, have you tried using an FFMPEG based tool (usually free) to add timecode to clips that don't have it? I haven't had a need for this, so haven't tested it myself but in theory it might work. (e.g ShutterEncoder can generate timecode from date/time stamp.) - this would be a re-wrap not a re-encode FYI.

Both method would great, but lean more onto XML cuz the colorist usually have a copy of HDD

Couldn't you grade in Resolve and save a lut that you bring over to VEGAS?

Systems:

Desktop

AMD Ryzen 7 1800x 8 core 16 thread at stock speed

64GB 3000mhz DDR4

Geforce RTX 3090

Windows 10

Laptop:

ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo 32GB (9980HK CPU, RTX 2060 GPU, dual 4K touch screens, main one OLED HDR)

@alifftudm95

Rather than make one, I found an existing youtube video that shows the XML roundtrip. It is a few years old, but that just establishes that this workflow has been working for quite a while now. The newer versions of Resolve work principally the same.

I suggest you try this with a simple timeline (one clip with known timecode) then build up from there to see where your error is. If you need further help we can discuss it then.

@fr0sty

You could save a LUT in Resolve, but that is quite limited in terms of what you can do to the footage, and of course you would need to export & import a LUT for each clip (or possibly group of similars) so not the most practical solution. In that case I would grade in Vegas - its really pretty good now.

I watch the same exact video last time but it no longer work. The clip I'm dealing sometimes wrap around MP4 (sony camera) instead of MOV.

Anyway, this is my previous post bout VEGAS XML, seems like a noticeable error in TC

Reason to grade in resolve is because of the Node ability. It doesn't destroy the image easily, plus the color tools in that program is just far more superior.

Of course it still works :) I use MP4 files all the time. Though, as I said before, not all mp4 files have timecode readable by Vegas. AFAIK timecode is not part of the mp4 standard, but is part of the mov standard. For example, Panasonic GH5 mp4 files have the timecode in a third data track that Vegas doesn't read. The solution is to re-wrap these files with an audio re-encode to AAC. Then Vegas will see the timecode and all works well. Alternatively just render out GrassValley avi proxies for all your files using Resolve and edit these in Vegas. When you pass the XML back to Resolve it will find the original media.

Upload some sample files that you cannot get Resolve to conform and I will see what can be done to make them work.
