Effects, (FX) Problem

halfwing wrote on 11/26/2004, 7:09 PM
Hello,

I've run across something I haven't seen yet.

In the past I was able to insert a video track, make the main video track a composting child and add effects to the new video track. I'm trying to add a cookie cutout to the new track and use the "track motion" to move it around on the main video track.

What's happening is when I add the effect to the new video track the keyframe marker is showing up but not the effect. Another odd thing about this is that no matter where my cursor is on the project the keyframe marker is inserting itself at the beginning of the project.

Has anyone seen this happen? Am I missing something that I did before to get the effect to work where I could use "track motion" to edit it?

Your help is appreciated,

John

I think you need o add the cookie cutter to the actual video track/effect. Darryl

Hi Darryl,

I can add the cookie cutter effect to the main video track, but then I don't get the track motioin and keyframe options. If the effect is on the main video track I have to use the pan crop tool to place and size it. My control is pretty limited that way and I can't get the effect to track with the object I am applying it to unless I break up the main track into little pieces. Even then it's pretty jerky.

In the last project I used that effect on, I was able to add it to a seperate video track and use the track motion tool to edit the effect. I'm missing something I did before or I think I have inadvertently changed a setting somewhere.

Thanks,

John

Hmmm. I just opened a clip, applied cookie cutter to the track FX, enabled the keyframe "lock to timeline," and can keyframe the effect all over the place. ??? I must be missing something in your description. What is it that you're trying to accomplish in final output? Darryl

Hi Darryl,

I think I'm missing something. Here's a screen shot with a video track added to the project. Notice the little keyframe diamond:

Here's the cookie cutter added directly to the main video track. Notice that the effect now shows on the projcet, but the little keyframe diamond is not there:

Have I changed a setting somewhere? Or do I need to change one?

Thanks,

John

With the FX applied to the main video track, Click the left hand keyframe icon at the bottom of the GUI, which will lock the keyframe timeline to the project timeline. Click anywhere on the timeline and a small curser line will appear. Change any parameter of the cookie cutter, and Vegas will insert a keyframe at that point in time. That parameter that you changed (location or whatever) will then transition from the initial setting to the new keyframe setting over time. Repeat as necessary.

The keyframe controls are available in both of you jpegs, you just need to grap a corner and expand the GUI to reveal the entire workspace.

??? help, Darryl

Okay,

I finished it. Here's what all the fuss was about. It's still not professional quality, but this isn't about that. When it's all said and done, it's just for fun.

Hi Winrock,

That's the web page for the video I created. On the right there is a button that says "CLICK FOR VIDEO". The webpage background is a grabbed frame so the quality isn't realy up to snuff. But it gets the point across.

Sorry about the confusion with the webpage bit. I just didn't feel like rewriting the introduction here so I used the webpage.

Laters,

John

Edit: Oh, the Bay Area Riders Forum. Yeah, that's a pretty crude bunch sometimes. But that "Flava Guy" thread was one of our better moments......
