Effects on the Master Output in Surround on V10

I'm afraid I'm finding a heap of bugs in Vegas 10 having just upgraded from 7. I'm testing on two quite different machines so the bugs I'm finding aren't system dependent, the OS for both is Win 7 64 bit (I'm using Vegas 32 bit).

First of all in a surround project I can't add any effects at all including its own surround effects, such as Wave Hammer on the Master. It's fine for individual channels or a bus.

Secondly with my Saffire Pro 24, when Vegas starts, even though I've selected the Saffire's asio driver, it seems to still initialise the generic low latency ASIO driver which prevents the Saffire from playing until I go back into the Audio Device settings and select the Saffire again. The time line just refuses to play and this is not an issue I've ever had on Vegas 7.

In general the surround seems particularly messed up. Another fun bug is trying to set the surround outputs. If you do this on the master channel, it randomly changes the output selected after you've chosen it if you start a project where you haven't selected the outputs through the options settings. In version 7 you could freely change the outputs during a project.

Another issue with surround is that the surround panner randomly disappears, leaving just a grey box. This may be a graphics driver issue but it's again not something I've seen on version 7 in my years of using it.

I'm also getting many crashes, which I'll try and keep a record of.

Finally, not a bug but a desperate plea, when is Vegas going to allow for true surround effects? I love Vegas but even though you can apply third party surround effects to a track, it only processes the first two channels (i.e. the front channels). Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I've never been able to insert a surround effect other than the three that come with Vegas and have them working in surround. Of course I can't test what happens if you put say Reaktor Surround on the master output, because I can't put any effects on the master surround output!

Another fun bug is trying to set the surround outputs.

I ran into this too. If you set the surround outputs on the "Mixing Console" random output stuff happens. Setting the surround outputs on the "Mixer" and they seem to stick.

At least so far.

Yes I found that too - quite random, changing one button can cause another to change as well!

Also here there appears to be a graphical bug - the Front Output button looks normal, but the Rear & C/LFE buttons look different e.g.

Can you apply any effect to the surround master? If not, we should submit that as a bug as well.

No, only certain FX are 5.1 e.g. Sony Wave Hammer Surround, Sony Track EQ & Sony Dither. (ultimately you can use other Multi-channel VST FX there, which have been specifically written for that purpose; they are rare, I have just one called PPMulatorPlus, which is metering)

But I just found, as you did, NONE of those Sony FX will load into Master Channel, but will load into a Stereo channel (where just 2 of 6 streams are utilized in the case of Wave Hammer Surround).

There are also some Stereo & Multichannel VSTs which I'm sure used to work (or at least appear in Track FX lists) in V9 that have disappeared in V10. Same VSTs show up fine in the VST tab in Preferences.

We appear to be Lab Rats again.....

Trying to reproduce this issue I confirm Vegas won't allow to load these effects on master when in 5.1 mode. I also got something very surprising I still haven't found a way to get back to previous state:

Each time I double-clicked on an 5.1 FX to load it into the master it vanished from the 5.1 FX folder !!! I can see the usual three Vegas 5.1 plugin in the Sony folder. Tried restart and reboot doesn't change anything, right now the 5.1 FX folder is empty...

Maybe a reinstall would fix this.

It looks like Audio in VP10 is broken and the mixing console is so buggy that the best is to avoid using it.

Waiting for 10b or c.

I tend to agree!

This is the message I'm getting from trying to insert a sony 5.1 effect on the master surround bus:

The plug-in could not be run. One or more componenets required to run this plug-in may be missing.
If a hardware key (dongle) is required to operate this plug-in, ensure that it is properly installed.
The plug-ins do not support the track's media type.

OK Details>>

Plugin does not support required connection

... and then the plugin disappears from my list

there`s actually a ton of problems with audio in SV10. even in stereo you can`t use 3rd party plugins (W7 64bit) cause most of them cause the app to freeze. horrbile thing the SV10 :( they need to fix it ASAP!!

well... to tell you the truth I could never use ver 9 - 64 bit.

I had constant plugin crashes in all versions of 9 / 64bit, even with Stereo projects. 64bit was only stable if I never used any audio plugins, or if I didn't have any audio.

I'm sure it's probably just because my old Waves plugins don't work right in 64 bit. But even newer Izotope plugins were crashing the 64bit version as well.

64 bit was such a pain that it just wasn't worth the trouble.

I have reproduced the 5.1 plug-in problems on the master bus and am in the process of addressing the issues for a future update of Vegas 10.

On the issue of running old waves plug-ins on a newer 64-bit machine: I spent time early last year tracking down a number of issues related to 32-bit plugins on a 64-bit machine. I found and fixed many problems that caused vegas to freeze. If there are any more bugs associated with 32-bit plug-ins running on a 64-bit machine, please post them here and I will dig into the issue again.

-------------------

So I decided to reinstall 10a (both x32 and x64) versions. The 5.1FX folder is still empty and there is no way to put back the 3 plugins into it with the Vegas user interface. Not a big issue but it puzzles me.

I could uninstall all my Vegas setup, clean registry and files and then reinstall all things but it means reinstall of 8c, 9c x32, 9e x64, V10 and then BCC. So I would be happy to avoid this :)

Is somebody aware of any trick in the registry or some file ?

Thanks

I was hoping Sony would suggest a solution when they fix the bug.....

After having spent a fair amount of time digging into the files and the registry, I gave up trying to fix it by hand (for me, those IDs in the registry are a total mess). I finally resetted Vegas to it's defaults in order to get all 5.1 FXs back in the Vegas r/o default folder.

Side effect: I've won an invitation to re-create all my folders (BCC7, VSTs, etc...)
