Effects within one clip

I have a long clip that I want to be able to work with without splitting it all up in the trimmer. Is it possible to apply setting/effects to a portion of a long clip? What I really want to do is mute the sound for a portion of the clip and then have it return. There are a couple of spots where I would like to do this.

1.Select the envelope editing tool
2.Select the audio track you are working with (just click on it once)
3.Right click and goto insert velocity envelope-->volume
3.Choose where you want your mute to start and right click and select add point
4.Choose where you want your mute to end and right click and choose add point
5.Also add two more points anywhere between your start and stop points
6.Select the first point after your start point and drag it to the botton of track
7.Select the next point (before your stop point and also drag to bottom
Voila!

(If you want a straight cut then when you drag the points down, place them directly below your start and stop points.)

(If you want a fade to mute then when you drag your points down, place them to the right of your start and to the loeft of your stop so that you have created a diagnol line. The length of this line will determine how slow/fast the fade is)

Hope that helps -Shon

If you're talking about adding video effects to a section of a long clip, use the keyframing feature to indicate where the effect starts and stops (reset to none). Change the properties of the keyframe to "hold" the effect(s) to the state you want for as long as you want.
