Efficient use of disk space

Newbie question here for sure. I've seen posts where people ask how to handle large video files where you want only parts of them. The answer seems to be use the Split feature to create several audio events and delete those you don't want.

The problem with this appears to be that you still have the huge video file stuck on your hard drive while you may only actually be using a piece of it. So is it better instead to capture short pieces and use the trim feature, then use each clip as an event?

Just trying to figure out the MO.

Okay, so it looks like trimming doesn't affect the original clip either. Is there any way to do destructive edits within the program, or do I have to capture just the bits I want?

Hello,

Well you could do a prerender it does'nt have to be exactly what you want just the parts you think you'll use, then delete the big file from the hard drive after you've saved the parts you think you'll use from it.

What do you mean by prerender?

Thanks.
