Emphasizing just one color

gogiants wrote on 12/18/2008, 5:19 PM
I have a strong feeling I'm going to feel silly when someone answers this, but...

I have a segment where I'd like to have one color (red, say) be emphasized, but the rest of the frame stays the same. The red section might glow, be oversaturated, or whatever.

When I do things like glow, the whole screen glows with red, not just the red section.

Any ideas?

You need this: http://aav6cc.blogspot.com/
This is a plugin recommended for all around here.

Experiment with Vegas' 'newbluefx colorize' effect.
Eugenia wrote on 12/19/2008, 2:23 AM
AFAIK, NewBlueFX's Colorize either adds a color on top of a greyscale image, or saturates the whole image, not just a single range of colors. The Aav ColorLab is more appropriate for the described job -- albeit a beta.

Will the Aav plug-in do something such as have a black and white video, but allow a red shirt on someone to come through as red, while the rest of the video remains black and white?

I have to admit that after going to the website, I have no idea what exactly it is that I am looking at...

Download it and try it. It is a specific-color-enhancer utility, but not on a black and white image.

I did these with the AAV ColorLab's predecessor version:

What Sonata describes (showing a red shirt while the rest stays black and white) is similar to what I'm trying to do.

I have the aav plugin and tried it and for what I'm trying to do there is a bit more red in other places on the image so it doesn't work quite right...

What you are looking for is called a "color pass". Check out Rdward Troxels newsletter for instructions here: http://www.videoguys.com/Vegas_Tips/TTS01-11.pdf

I repeat: the newblue colorize can do it. Check this out:

Tweaking the settings will bring back the colours, while oversaturizing one colour (e.g. red).

Ivan123...

I have VMS 9 Platinum Pro. Part of the package included NewBlue Cartoonr, but I can't seem to find the NewBlue Colorize fx. Should it have been part of VMS 9 PP? Am I looking in the wrong place?

As far as I know, Plat 9 Pro comes with newblue transitions, but not the newblue effects, with the exception of Cartoonr (which can be downloaded from newblue's website for free anyhow and works just fine with VMS8).
In the past, in other threads on this forum, I have vented my dislike about VMS 9 marketing blunders. Excluding newblue fx is certainly one, adding 'Pro' to the Platinum name is another (causing tremendous confusing for newcomers keeping Vegas Pro and Vegas Full apart...). Bundling DVDA 4.5 with VMS9 is yet another blunder, as it doesn't support blu-ray authoring (Sony's own HD standard!) Shall I continue? The cinescore plugin is worthless without the song libraries and it doesn't allow mood changes. VMS9 is still limited to 4 video tracks. Etc. Etc.
My advise, if you have VMS8 Platinum, is to skip upgrading to 9 altogether, unless you have a really good reason, and to wait for the Vegas team to get their act together again.

EDIT: VMS9 is still a pretty good program in itself, of course. It's the bundling that really angers me.

Ivan123...

In August, I upgraded to VMS 9 PP from version 3.0 (when it was called Screenblast). That's why I don't have the NewBlue fx that you get with VMS 8.

Any idea how I might obtain a free copy of those bundled fx's?

I don't think you'll get these for free... Unless Santa is in the office... ;-)
Newblue charges $139 for this collection of effects, called Art Effects.

I got free NewBlue video effects including colorize with Platinum 8. As I recall, I received a registration number with the Vegas software package. After updating to Platinum 9, the effects were still there. I was able to duplicate the video effect posted by Ivan123. I also added the AAV ColorLab beta 6 and changed my red fish to blue.
mike_in_ky wrote on 12/20/2008, 2:17 PM
I kinda figured that would be the case. Oh well, it didn't cost anything to ask. Perhaps I'll keep checking the NewBlue website to see if that bundle ever goes on sale.

Mike,
You could always buy a copy of VMS8Platinum. They aren't as expensive anymore.
mike_in_ky wrote on 12/21/2008, 12:18 PM
How much does Platinum 8 cost?

321...

I downloaded and installed AAV Colorlab v1.0b6 you referenced above. Afterwards, I launch VMS 9 and then bring in one of my short projects. I then select the "Video fx" tab (bottom left of screen) so that I can select the Colorlab fx. As soon as I select that tab, I small error box entitled "Colorlab" opens saying "failed initializing Direct3D" and then locks up VMS. Any ideas?

You can email the author. I've done this and he responded quickly. His email can be found in the AAV Colorlab Readme.pdf. While you're there, check out the AAV ColorLab requirements.

I've written to the author explaining the error and I am awaiting his reply. Thanks

I heard back from the author. Apparently, the problem lies with my onboard video adaptor. Will have to go to "plan B" - upgrade to another video adaptor.

There is a listing for platinum 8 on evilbay, aprox $43 after shipping. I'm thinking about buying a copy to get the newblue effects. I own 9, sucks to have to buy an old version.

"Will the Aav plug-in do something such as have a black and white video, but allow a red shirt on someone to come through as red, while the rest of the video remains black and white?"

I have accomplished this with the basic VMS chroma keyer and black & white FX; no 3rd party tool needed. Here's how I did it:

1) Place two identical copies of video on over-and-under tracks.

2) On the top video copy, add chroma keyer FX ***first***. Use the dropper tool to select the color from the event that you wish to bring out. Now Turn "show mask only" on, then tweak low and high thresholds so that only the color you desire still shows through (it will appear white, with the rest of the event fading to black). then turn "show mask only" off.

3) Again on the top copy of the video, add Black and White as a ***second*** FX (should appear after the chroma keyer).

That should cause everything but the color you desire to be black & white in the video event.
