Encoding for older players

So I have people comming back with CD's I made with mpeg .wmv and .mov files respectivly and they say "hej, this wouldn't play on my computer - I have WIN98 and can't be bothered with installing a new player (a frightening and provoking thought for many people) or what ever, I'm not a computer geek I just want to do all iinds of neat stuff though."

SOOOOOOOOO, when burning a Multimedia CD for this type of client what codex is most reliable? How do I know if it's backward compatible?

(Just got SPOT'S new book - looks great)

Thanks i.a. Garo

MPEG1 is the only one that seems to be universal. Any of the others require specific software.

Garo, remember you can put an installer on ANY SVCD directly from the Vegas timeline, giving them the installer and codec.

Can you include an installer for the other multimedia formats in Vegas when making a multimedia CD?
Spot|DSE wrote on 10/29/2004, 11:10 AM
Yes,
Tools/Burn CD/Multimedia CD/include installer.
Just browse for and point to the installer. If the disk doesn't have the player, Vegas will insert an HTML message on their system saying they don't have a player, would they like to install one?

Awesome. i did not know that. Great info.

What preciecsly is meant by "Installer" I have a MPsetXP.exe file but I would assume that this would require WINXP to run it. On the other hand I have what seems to be several different versions of Windows Media Player in a sub catalog under Programs - do I include, say, player2.exe ? is that the "Installer" being refered to?

Hope I'm not the stupidest person on the list ... :-)

YOu can download an installer from the Microsoft website. You'll just need it for Win98Se if you're dealing with older players.

Cool, I'll go get it but a curious thing is that some people consider downloading new stuff as a kind of witchcraft or other kind of esoteric and dark activity subject to suspistion and ridicule. So I think I'll try putting the videos in a web page along with a "Please choose your player" indicating Operative system that is consistant with Player version and the abitity to go on line and install a new player if so desired. So I get them cummin' or goin' - they don't have to call me in the middle of the night and act provoced over my audacity in taking for granted their mediaplayer version

I thought you were putting this out on a CD? You can include the installer on a CD. If it's download, just stick with MPEG 1 if you've got testy people. Or, pay the $$ and use Quicktime, paying for a QT server. Or use Real

Yeap, on a CD but NOT using the "Play movie inside web page" option - I'll render to different codec mpeg1, mpeg2, .mov, then <embed> them including links to installer(s) etc - so everyone can choose what ever they like. Opps getting a bit over enthusiastic again!! But I get frustrated over clients who consider me as a threat because I use recent program versions of stuff - so am trying to find the lowest common denominator and method to sooth these folks.
SPOT - I just sent you a private email - have a second? Next year is Official Design Year in Sweden - would it be feasable to arrange some vasst/Vegas seminars over here?
