EPM's statement in another post about memory.

Just to clarify EPM stated:
<FYI- files that are present in the media pool, even if not used on the timeline, are "open" and as such do consume memory.>

Putting it in dumb guy terms, I would consume less memory if instead of loading an entire folder of say high res stills, not knowing if I'll use them all.I only import the ones I'm using into the media pool, and choose them from the folder with the explorer window, right?

Yeah, but very hard to do if it's a slide show with music, etc.

Yeah I agree, it would sure be easier if the explorer window allowed thumbnail veiw. Why doesn't it anyway?

While not the idea solution, you can "preview" any media from the Vegas Explorer window by clicking on the play/ stop buttons above that window. It will just override your current project contents (only in preview window) and won't hurt nothing.

Yeah but if you still length is set to like 5 sec's it just flashes up there.

I didn't think that the default still length affected the preview length - learn something new all the time.

Just so you know, instead of having to hit the play button every time you want to preview a potential clip, you can just click the preview clip once selected option in the tool bar. So if you choose to preview clips this way, that will save you a LOT of clicks. :)

yup,
thats what I mean like you said withthe auto preview set on and a still length set to 5 sec. it's hard for me to see it and process it if I want to use it. maybe its my slow brain, but then you have to click another image then click back to get to see it again.

I think you can use the windows explorer window though to do what you want.
Set it to show thumbnails and you can drag the files from there onto the Vgeas T/L.

Duh , nows theres a good idea staring me in the face, I know you can drag and drop from Win Exp right to the T/L.

Doesn't all of this sort of go back to those who have asked for better media managment from version to version? Maybe adding on "Better memory managment for the media management" would be a good suggestion.
farss wrote on 1/22/2005, 5:30 PM
I'll say I'm very ambivalent about that. I look at systems like FCP, Pinnacle and Avid that have better media management but it seems to me that in the process your PC gets take over as there's a clash between the traditional concepts of bins and racks etc and a computer file system.
If it could be done without screwing up the simplicity of the current system (of which I make no use) then the more power to those who would benefit from it.

Now I use a combination WEx and VEx. VEx wont show thumbs it will throw them to the Preview - fine! But I want a quick ID-ing of the clips/stills that I can easily get with WEx. I throw them on the T/L and they are there in Media pool - done.

The project I'm on has taught me MASSES about huge numbers of clips and capturing and managing all this stuff.
