Equipment Graveyard

When do you junk it?

With technology advancing and equipment becoming more affordable, what do you do with old, antiquated editing systems. For instance, we have two Avid MC 1000's on the old PowerMac system, an old Casablana...you know, stuff that any reasonable person would overlook for Vegas. (Although everything's there, I seriously doubt anyone would get the Avids working...just too complicated.) I don't want to donate it...primarily because they would expect me to "get em' started" (been down that road).

Is it worth the time and trouble to try to sell this type of ancient stuff on eBay...or is the back of my pickup truck a better method of getting rid of it?

i donate(d) to any youth centre that wants equipment. i DO however tell them there's no way i'm going to spend ANY time getting them up and running with anything....

i had a batch of assorted pc's and mac's from a major institutional client a couple of years back and gave them to three local youth groups. out of about 10 computers each the got at least three running. if nothing else, they can run open office and get a 'feel' for 'office'....

video stuff the same, though i have had complaints that once they got things working, the quality wasn't much good (low band / svhs and even 3chip hi8).

I am always totally amazed at what people will buy in eBay. Definitely worth a try if you want to make a few bucks on it. There is a Dongle for an Avid MC 1000 on their now for $695. You never know.

Friend of mine sold a bunch of dead Sony batteries on eBay. They can actually be usefull to make power taps e.g. an adaptor to run the cam off a DC supply. Odd thing was the guy who bought them for a few dollars complained that they were exactly as described, "dead".

eBay, schools and *recycling* ; those CRTs, there's lots of lead into 'em.
Good news: a (very) few countries now make it an obligation for companies to take back the old, aged stuff and take care of it. So now, they design their stuff with re-usable materials.

Don't wanna be moralistic here, btw. It's just a thought...

Isara is always looking for stuff (www.isara.org)

Shipping to Thailand might cost you a bit...but then PK will put up photos of little smiling kids and you'll feel good.

Hey, since we're on donations, if anyone has a wonderful Christmas during which Mr. & Mrs.Claus pour many toys down your chimney, such as...

Some high-end HD camcorders and you want to get rid of your Sony HDR-FX! or slightly pricier upper-sibling, well then...

Feel free to consider me -- you won't have to "get it up and running" for me either :)
Only half-kidding: I'll pay up to $2500 for such a mint condition toy-tool.
