#1 leaves the data on the disc, just erases the headers and allows you to overwrite the data as if it wasn't there, but old data fragments will still occupy the spaces between your new data.

#2 is like a disc "format" -- not only erases the headers, but also all data leaving you a fresh disc -- takes longer, but is more secure.

Option #1 is quicker and fine 98% of the time, unless you work in a high-security environment where compromise of data is at issue.

If, in my incomplete knowledge I have misstated something, I appreciate it if someone will correct me.

with DVD+RW's if you didn't do #2 & the new content took less space then the previous, it could have problems playing. But if the new data was more then the old, there were no problems (as everything was overwritten).

Might/might not be the same for BD playback.
