If you use your left hand on the JKL keys for transport and the right hand for the mouse, you probably have noticed that you need to turn the keyboard to about a 45-degree in order to orient the keyboard to your wrist. This movement of the keyboard has always felt disconcerting to the editing process of what should be "normal" ergonomic comfort.
Bearing this in mind, I recently re-mapped the Z, X, and C keys in lieu of the JKL keys and experience an immediate increase in comfort. In addition, I frequently use the "S" key for splitting, as well as other CTRL commands (CTRL+S, CTRL+C CTRL+V, CTRL+Z, CTRL+Y, etc.) so this change ultimately decreased time required for keyboarding.
Give it a try! Here is the path for keyboard re-mapping: Options -> Customize Keyboard. Don't forget to "Save As" the mapping with a new name for future use.
