I get an error after 12% complete when rendering from Vegas Pro 8b to an MPEG file for DVD Acrobat 4.5. The system is Windows XP Pro, SP2 on a Quad Core (Intel boxer motherboard) with 4 GB memory.

What is on your timeline at the point it stops (the 12% mark)? What type of file/what type of effect/ waht are you working in (project settings)? Are you working in 32 bit or 8?

Hi ChipGallo,

Welcome to Vegas Pro 8.0b.

Below is my latest crash from this morning ... I also have XP (Intel BadAxe Mobo) with a Quad and 4GB memory.

Looks very similar don't you think?

The thing that I've found over the last 6 months of having this problem is that it's best not to use Vegas for making videos if you can avoid it ... I found that the box is very handy for storing books and stuff in.

Cheers and Good Luck,

I've been using Vegas since version 3. You can see examples of my work (all edited with Vegas) shot with two cameras -- Sony DCR-TRV900 and Canon HV 20 more recently on:

http://www.vimeo.com/chipgallo
http://www.youtube.com/chipgallo

I now have Adobe Master Collection to learn and use, and I will if I am forced to. Master Collection cost many times the price of Vegas/Sound Forge/DVD Architect and in my opinion has a steeper learning curve so I am trying all the solutions to the Vegas Pro 8 issue(s). To date I have tried XP Service Pack 3 but it broke the M-Audio 1010LT driver; I backed out of XP Pro SP 3 and had to reinstall some driver software as the so-called check points were not functional for stepping back the OS.

I am using the 32 bit XP Pro OS and 8 bit not 32 for Vegas.

Right now I am rendering about 20% of my project to DVD Architect "best" quality MPEG 2 with audio to see if it crashes with that. I HAD SUCCESSFULLY rendered this project before with color fixes and all edits, a nested Vegas project with around 31 nested files. I had Microsoft updates enabled (my bad) and it started barfing on Tuesday night after installing some alleged hot fix or another. Now I think I have backed out of those, fingers crossed!

I don't think in my case Vegas alone can be blamed. I don't have a box because I use the download versions so there isn't even a place to put things!

Spoke too soon, there was an error on the smaller render:

Update -- I took out all the color correction and brightness/contrast adjustments, which were done the individual clips by inserting video filters. Right now I am up to 10% complete on a render. Hoping this will allow me to finish the project, albeit without matching camera color or brightness. I guess I should have tested a smaller video first ...

Update #2 at 8:06 p.m. the render crashed with an error at 21% and here is the dump. There is nothing significant at that point in the time line.

I just noticed the Windows updates that occurred on June 10th into June 11:

OK, another update on my troubleshooting. I repaired the SP2 install and adding admin rights after getting "Access is denied" messages during the XP SP2 install. I uninstalled Vegas 8b. I defragged the render drive. I reinstalled Vegas 8 Pro with defaults. When rending my 3-camera (one Canon HV20 and two SD cams) I crash around 28% with the error seen below. Next steps? Try the VEG tools that split up the capture.

I did notice in the preview window that HD footage ran slower than real time and SD footage ran faster. I'm thinking Vegas has a problem with this.

Oh, and I'm trying the tips that Michael Shive listed his 6/15 post "For the Vegas 8 Crash Test Dummies: RAM Preview."

I converted all the M2T files to AVI and changed the nested files in the master veg to point to them. This time is crashes very quickly, before it even reachs 1% rendered. suspect that the MPEG rendering software has a bug which I will report to Sony.
ChipGallo wrote on 6/15/2008, 6:53 PM
Rendering to the AVI format also crashes, around 71%. Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 is looking better and better at least to learn. These video files just aren't that complicated ...
