After turning off the computer, it came back. Rather aggravating.

Any other ideas?

Have a look in the Knowledgebase here where you will see some of the known causes of this error and suggestions for how to track it down if yours isn't caused by one of the more usual villains. (It is usually caused by Vegas finding a DirectX plugin that it doesn't like for some reason.)

thanks Mark, after filling a support request form, this fix was presented. It did not show up in any searches. After deleting the regster key and rebooting, everyone seems happy again.
