ERROR - 'Exception thrown by method called'

I opened my Vegas Movie Studio 11 today, I have a ton of work to do.
Every time I try to render my movie I get the error everyone is talking about .
'An error occurred while creating media file. Exception thrown by method called'

I have tried everything to get this working

1 - Update to newest version of 11
2 - Reduce number of threads for Movie Studio
3 - Increase RAM available to Movie Studio
4 - Install Windows updates
5 - Fresh install of Movie Studio

Nothing has worked. I have paid for this software Sony and you are doing nothing to help customers with this issue.

I'm no expert so this is only good as a bump for you.

Any newly installed software running in background. (IE: Antivirus)?
Is it possible there's a corrupt file type within the project file?

Many here have much more knowledge than I can impart to you.

Good luck...

What OS are you using? 32/64 bit?

Is your fresh install a 'clean' install'?

I am running into the same damn issue out of nowhere.

I downloaded the trial version a month or so ago and it turned out that it played back/pre-rendered my .avi files with ease unlike sony vegas 9 that i was using. So i bought a copy of the program for when the trial ran out.

I made 2 projects in the trial version, both of which rendered out perfectly fine. As soon as i submitted my product key and registered it it started having issues.... i can only render directly to dvd, in crappy quality, or to youtube, in 480p. Absolutely not acceptable.

And i'll also mention that the projects that rendered just fine with the trial are now failing. It doesnt appear to be a codec issue b/c it wont even render sound tracks or .jpeg files by themselves.

I have no idea what is going on or how ot get around it. But now that I have these project files saved through movie platinum 12 i can't even open them in my vegas pro 9 since its an older version....

if someone has any input please chime in. B/c after 3 hours of installs, uninstalls, reinstalls, restarts, codec donwloads, etct etc im back as square one.

rgavanes,
First post? This is not the same issue.

Start your own topic.

"codec downloads"?
You are entirely on your own here. A cold OS install "may" be in order.

There is absolutely no difference between the trial version and the registered version of Vegas except for a serial number.

Best.

I have the same issue on two computers so I'm suspecting that a Windows 7 update has broken it. Used to render without error, now errors whatever the video file. Tried a trial of 12 and same thing.
So far, looks like a waste of money!

EDIT: In my case, this was an upgrade from VP11->12 (well, technically 10->11->12.. But it may apply to your issue as well)

I know this is an old post, but I was encountering this same issue and seem to have resolved it.. Below is my debugging, and at the bottom is the resolution (if you don't want the details)

I duplicated the problem while running sysinternals "Process Monitor" and identified a few interesting points that may have been causing the failure. Specifically, Vegas was accessing a file "(Untilted).sfl", if I recall correctly, within the mcplug2 directory within "%APPDATA%\Sony\File Templates" .

I noticed that the modify date on these files was prior to my upgrade to VP12, meaning they were remaining from my VP11 install, yet VP12 was still attempting to use them. Looking into the files, there was text data staying "[The last unsaved template that you used..]".

---- The resolution ----

I figured that my upgraded VP12 was getting tripped up on the unsaved file templates from my VP11. First, I closed Vegas. Then, I renamed the folder "%APPDATA%\Sony\File Templates" to "%APPDATA%\Sony\File Templates2", ensuring that VP12 would not be able to find the files.. Lastly, I started Vegas again. I created a mock project (just a solid color media event in the default blank project), and attempted to render; it worked without throwing the error message.

If you know how to use Process Monitor, you may be able to identify specifically what file is causing the error. It being a rendering template makes sense though, and even moreso if your Vegas Pro install underwent an upgrade. There's a possibility that your specific issue is due to a different folder under your %APPDATA%\Sony folder. In either case, this is probably something that should be reported as a bug..

Hope this helps!

Thanks garrettb,

I was having this problem for some time.

Renaming the following folder did the trick!

C:\Users\PC\AppData\Roaming\Sony\Render Templates.

Hi guys!
I resolved this problem TONIGHT here!

Here my Windows is in portuguese, so something can be different in english, but ok...

Follow this 6 steps with Vegas Pro software closed:
1. Go to the directory: C:\ProgramData\Sony2. Create a New folder for example "temp_trash"
3. Move all folders that are inside "C:\ProgramData\Sony\" to this "temp_trash" except the "Application Extension" folder.
4. Open the Vegas Pro
5. Open your project
6. Click "Render As"...and Wallah! No more problems!

Notes:
1. If you cancel the render and try to render again, the program can crash.
2. If in step 6 appeared the error message, click "OK" and click "Render As" again.

I hope it works for you like worked for me!

Bye friends!
