Error in adding videofiles to timeline

timme wrote on 2/10/2011, 2:00 PM
I just bought Vegas Movie Studio HD 10.0 Platinum version. When I drag my videoclips (MPEG2) from the explorer window into the timeline, Movie Studio stalls when I pass the 25min mark on the timeline. It only uploads the sound but no image is displayed. When I try to watch my project the program stalls. If I stay under 20 min on the timeline I can watch the filmclips that I've added to the project. Does anybody has this problem to? So basically I can't make an edit a film longer that 20min instread of the usual 60min. I've tried this also with version 8.0d and I can make the project als long as I want without any problems. So adding and editing and making a film with Movie Studio 8.0d works fine.
I have a Sony HDD camera DCR-SR90E and a Dell computer with an i7 intel core 2,96GHZ, 8MB, Graphics 1GB ATI Radeon.
I hope that someone can help me

20 minutes is significant because that's right about the file size limit of a FAT32 hard drive. Is your project or your video by any chance on a second or external hard drive.

Hard drives come from the factory formatted FAT32. Converting them to NTFS removes the 4 gig file size cap.

You also don't say how you got the video from the camcorder to your hard drive. Ideally you should plug your camcorder into your computer via USB and use Vegas Movie Studio HD's Device Explorer to import the video to your hard drive and into your project. This will ensure that your files are properly conformed.

It also helps to ensure your drives are all well defragmented and that you've removed tmp files and any possible spyware. And ensure you have the latest version of Quicktime, which all PC-based video editors use to work with their video.

If Vegas 8 works right as you said, then it's a Platinum 10 bug. I'd say upgrade to Pro 10 (after you try its trial version), but that's quite some money.

I've imported the videofiles from my camera onto my pc by just connection the camera with the USB cable and just copie them onto the harddisk. Not by importing them with Vegas.

But I also thought it was a Vegas 10 problem because it works fine with Vegas 8. Since I have bought this pc a month ago there are not to many files on it or spyware that can block Vegas. I'll try Vegas pro, but as you say it's expensive and editing films is just a hobby of mine. I've already send an official query to Sony end of january, but no answer yet. I'm still waiting.

I've downloaded the Vegas Movie Studio pro 10.0c version and still the same problem. Now after 30 min, the last fames say Media Offline. Retried the same thing with Movie Studio Platinum 8.0d and no problems overhere. I can add as many clips I want. Strange isn't it?

Definitely sounds like a file size limit of some kind to me.

When was the last time you cleared your tmp files and spyware and gave you hard drive a deep defragmentation?

And I assume you're not doing any strange things like partitioning your drive or anything like that. But is there anything at all about your configuration that might be worth knowing that could contribute to this choke?

You may also be seeing interference from your antivirus software -- especially if you are using Norton or McAfee.

Check out the thread from Rainer. This sounds like the VMS 2G memory limit. I had similar problems trying to import more than about 30 short MPEG clips onto the timeline. I applied Large Address Aware to VMS and I no longer have Low Memory errors. I've recently edited an hour long movie and rendered from NTSC to PAL with no problems.

Thanks Jack S, i've applied LAA program and now Movie Studio works fine! I can add videoclips up to 60 min and more without any problems.
