Error message and program crashing

I'm using Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 6.0a with my Sony HDV camera. I've had the software for a couple of months and have made about 20 short movies, none longer than 15 minutes,

I've been amazed how stable and solid this Sony program seemed, having tried Pinnacle. I had zero problems assembling or rendering these shorter movies. Two days ago I started on a 45 minute project and the trouble started. When I had reached about 30 minutes into the project I started getting these crashes and error messages..

I would reboot my computer and start again, making a little progress , until the error and shutdown occurred. I was saving constantly so when I rebooted I had the new work on the project saved. I have finished the 45 minute project but absolutely cannot get it to render without this message popping up and shutting me down.

The error message says:
An error has ocurred during the current operation.
An Exception has occurred.

I reinstalled the program and the same thing continued to happen.

I have a P4, 3.6 ghz processor with 2 Gigs of RAM, an NVidia GeForce 6800 card.

Any help will be appreciated.

This may or may not have anything to do with your problem, but whenever I see something strange just start to happen I feel it is worthwhile to update my virus signatures and do a virus scan. You just never know...

Is the problem happening at the same place each time? You could try selecting and rendering different parts of the timeline and see if you can isolate a problem area.

I'll bet Ian has used pinnacle. :-D

A few things come to mind... Do you have ample disk space for the files - including temp files and render files? Have any of the files or directories gotten any recent restriction to access; ie. admin access only? Have you updated any drivers recently? Have you changed the vms preferences for device settings for audio or video cards?

I got a similar msg a while back and found that I was trying to use a mode on the capture card which the card did not support via vegas (proprietary capture card).

I had a similar problem with one of my latest projects. A VMS convert from Pinnacle myself, I soon fell in love with the stability of the Sony program. Then, when compiling one project in particular, I began encountering similar problems as you are describing. I was having Pinnacle flashbacks with the frustrations of these problems.

The culprit? My computer had been infected by some spyware and viruses. Don't be afraid to send the error report after a crash. You'll recieve a response on what may be the reason.

To check if you have adware/spyware, go to add/remove programs (list them in order of "last used") to check if any has been running on your computer. Also run any one of the assortment of virus scans. That may help. It did for me.

I have only had one crash with Sony movie studio and it was because I was rendering and doing other things on the computer at the same time and had not cleaned my drives nor defraged them. I basically ran out of RAM and disc memory. Remember your temp files while working on the movies will be about the size of your original file. My last was an hour an ten minutes and was 33 gigs x two. I have 460 gig and still have to monitor my usage and keep my fingers off the keyboard while rendering.

Well, I got my problem solved - sort of - by backing up all my data on an external hard drive, including my project and the video files, Then formatted my hard drive, reinstalled Windows XP, SP 2 and put only the Sony Vegas Movie Studio 6.0a software on it. I transferred the project and files back over to my hard drive, opened Movie Studio, dropped in my project and lo and behold, the 45 minute movie spread out perfectly, allowed me to edit on it for about an hour and after I got it just so - render it with out a hitch back to my HDV camera. So I have my movie on tape!

I thought, okay, whatever the clitch was is gone so I started adding other programs back to my computer. The first was Norton System Works 2006. I then tried to render the movie to a WMV HD file and guess what, the message returned! OH NO! I turned off the anti-viral program and the message still popped up and would freeze my computer.

I went ahead and put everything back on my computer and decided I'm buying a second computer which will be devoted only to movie making. It'll have Windows and Movie studio only.

Question - Do they make a splitter cable for a DVI connection that would allow me to plug two computers into one monitor? Anyone doing this?

You can get a KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switch that will allow you to run at least 2 computer to the the same monitor. A KVM will also let you use the same keyboard and mouse for the computers. I say at least 2 as they make them so you can view a bunch of computers from one monitor.

They are not cheap though. Just doing a quick check on the web I found this http://www.kvm-switches-online.com/dvi-kvm-switch.html. The cheapest is about $160. Regular KVM's (not DVI) are much cheaper if you don't mind using the VGA connectors.
