Error message while rendering

Lijan wrote on 1/10/2011, 1:38 PM
I have finally finished my 1 hr 48 minute project. Now to render to the hard drive, and eventually want to burn to Blu ray.
I get an error message now, after about 30 seconds of rendering.
I have tried the following so far (after reading some other suport questions/answers regarding similar problems):
I have matched project properties to source media. However, I have 3 different types of source media in the project: from 2 different digital cameras as well as my SONY camcorder (HD footage in AVCHD). So, my project properties match the AVCHD media in the project. Is this correct?
I have decreased the number of render threads to 2. I have tried various templates, tried the "render as" as well as "make movie" options. Nothing works.
Any solutions???
Thanks again for your help

What about trying to fix the 2GB memory cap problem? Easiest solution here: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=12&MessageID=727069

Are you referring to 64-bit processors?
I have a 32-bit, 2 GB RAM, 3gHz, Core 2 Quad processor.
Does this fix apply to my system as well?

Yes, probably will fix , but you need to add at least another gig of RAM. The memory cap problem has been very widely discussed - see this thread for alternative methods and links to the various 32 bit OS solutions: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=697122&Replies=49. You could first try rendering a 20min chunk - if this doesn't work the problem could be something else.

Rainer,
If I understand correctly, I need more than 2GB RAM to render any AVCHD project of great length. My other AVCHD projects (much shorter in length) render fine.
The 2GB RAM "bug" means that VMS can't access any more than 2GB RAM from your processor?
So, before I complete the Fix, you're saying it won't do any good unless I have more RAM?
And should I get more RAM than 3GB, just in case?

I will try rendering a 20-minute chunk of this project in the meantime though. Please stay posted with me, as I will probably have more questions.
thanks

Correction: I do have 4 Gb RAM (now I recall this, and checked my spec sheet!)

This fix didn't work for the project. I followed the instructions exactly.
I chose "make move", "render and burn" to blu-ray.
Trying various templates, etc.- both Main Concept and SONY AVC, 15mbps and 16mbps, etc...........4x speed. Closes almost immediately on some settings, and after a couple minutes on other settings.
I would have set the render template to match project property settings (1080-60i (1920X1080), but then the project size would have grown to 30GB - and I only have a 25GB blu-ray disc.
This is very frustrating, as you can tell.
Any other ideas?

Dang. You don't really have a choice about 1080i. Yours is a rather large project but at 15mbps should fit. Try taking it one step at a time to isolate the problem. Start by rendering the footage and using DVDA instead of burning off the timeline?

I rendered a 6 min loop of this project. However, the only way I could get it to render, was to use the "render as":
Main Concept AVC/AAC with the "DEFAULT" template.
It then shows the project as an mp4 file with video at 320X240 (which I'm asuming is NOT AVCHD??)
All other templates
I opended up this file in DVDA, but it doesn't show the video - just the audio. !! "video stream attributes could not be determined".

What is the reason for this?

I have checked the graphics and audio drivers - they are up to date.
I have done a thorough virus scan - found two infected files which were deleted. Did a registry clean, etc
Ughhh!

Hi Lijan
I should have asked which version of VMS first up, but I'm assuming it's Platinum 10.
Go Project: Render as.
Set "Save as Type" to MainConcept MPEG-2 from the drop down list.
Select the appropriate Blu-ray 1920X1080 template (usually 60i) from the drop down list. If it won't let you do this, try reloading Vegas. If it does, click "save".
Does DVDA recognise the video?

I see (at least) two potential areas causing the problem either on the source side or the target format rendered side of the process.

First try to render into a safe codec format like the sony YUV in an AVI container. Since your target is Bluray try the HD 1080-60i render format. You will need a large amount of hard drive space for the file. If you can successfully render the sequence to this format it rules out the source format differences as the problem.

Assuming the source combining works out, your next step is to determine the codec problem. I suggest converting that AVI file into the mp4 target. For AVC there is a choice of MainConcepts and Sony AVC codecs. I would try both to see if there is any sensitivity to your system.

Hopefully you can isolate your problem and identify a solution.

Rainer -
I have VMS Plat 9.0b.....however, I was going to upgrade to HD 10 after I finish rendering/burning this mega-project. But, maybe it would help the situation if I just upgraded to 10 now and try rendering it again in 10?
I believe I've already tried to render as MainConcept MPEG-2 and the 1920X1080-60i template, but that didn't work either. (but maybe I didn't "save as Type"??) I'll have to check my notes if I tried that one.

Should I UNinstall VMS 9 and download/install VMS 10?

Will also try Big Daddy's suggestions......
Rainer wrote on 1/18/2011, 1:59 PM
Maybe. No need to uninstall 9. Just to add to big daddy's suggestion, codec problems are sometimes hard find and isolate, but if you have additional codecs installed that you are not sure about start by uninstalling them (e.g. uninstall any codec packs).

OKay -
big daddy - I was able to render the 6-min portion of the project via:
"Make Move"......Save it to hard drive.....using Video for Windows (Sony YUV codec), HDV 1080-60i. Success so far.
Noticed that DVDA showed a message prior to "prepare and burn" that both the video and audio files will be compressed.
So, the problem you say - is not on the "source side" since it rendered in the safe codec format.

Now, to determine the "codec problem", you suggest to "convert that AVI file into the mp4 target."
I've tried to search how to do this, but no answers. SO, please
how do I convert this file back into AVCHD format? Do I accomplish this somehow in VMS? Please be clear and specific, as you know I'm a beginner.
thanks
