Error on Printing to tape, VV5 to Sony DCR-HC30

I'm a total noob when it comes to printing to tape from my Vegas Video WinXP setup. I'm using Firewire and have a good connection (I'm able to use the tape controls and preview the video), but when I go to Print to Tape, I get the error "The file format is not correct for the current device".

I have printed to tape before (to HI8) with no problem. Could the formay error be because the movie I'm trying to print is and AVI and not a MPEG format? I thought the camera was supposed to convert it?

I've already scoured the docs and Googled to try to locate the meaning of the error message. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

What are you trying to do, print an .avi to a Hi8 analog tape? Render it first, then use the PTT feature to play the avi. Connect a monitor to the Hi8 camera and fiddle with the settings on the camera until it will play in the monitor. Then hit the record button on the Hi8 camera. If it plays in the external monitor it will record in the camera in Hi8.
