Error: Playback device does not exist??

I just upgraded to DVDA 5.0, and when I try to play a clip file (mpeg2 NTSC DVD wide screen rendered in Vegas 8) from the timeline or the preview screen I get this error message:

A device is not available
The playback device does not support the current output format.
The playback device does not exist

Strange, because playing the source file from the timeline in Vegas works just fine. Playing the source file in the DVDA explorer window works just fine. Playing the file from the timeline or from the preview window in DVDA 5.0 generates the error.

I'm running Vista Home on a Q6600 processor with 3gb ram and plenty of disc space. For audio I have a Focusrite Sapphire external firewire audio box.

The thing is, everything worked fine until 5.0 got installed. Re-booting and re-starting the program didn't help. Anyone have an idea what I might try next?

Thanks, Gary

This sounds like an audio playback issue. This could present a challenge because I don't think DVD-Architect 5 has a audio device menu.

Check that you do not have any other applications open that may make use of audio. Failing that, you could try and change the default audio device in Control Panel (in Sounds and Audio Devices) to any alternative options and see if that frees it up.

Robert thanks, I think you are on to something. I uninstalled 5.0 and went back to 4.5, but it didn't help. Same problem - even though 4.5 used to work perfectly.

When I went into Vegas, out of the blue it gave me the same error message! Somehow in the process of installing/uninstalling DVDA, Vegas had its audio device changed to "Microsoft Sound Mapper." When I changed it back to "Focusrite Sapphire" it worked fine.

The problem now is that everything except DVDA works fine. Apparently DVDA is stuck on the Sound Mapper device and there is no way I can see to change it.

Any more suggestions - how about from Sony techs? Do you guys read these forums?

There was another thread recently with the same sort of problem, only the mapper has to be set in Vegas I think as DVDA always wanted to use it. Now in DVDA5 in the options there's a checkbox on whether to use the mapper or not.

FWIW it only seems a problem with some rigs, not others.
