Error rendering .wav

I'm using Vegas Movie Studio (4a) plus DVD. I have a project about 40 minutes long. If I attempt to render to hard disk, the program closes with an .avi file that ends about a third of the way into the project. If I select output to DVD, the mpeg video file is rendered with no problem, but the program displays an error message partway through the .wav render that says something like, "error while rendering media file:" and names the .wav file. Things I have tried:

1. To check if the software had become scambled somehow I tried rendering an older project, and no error resulted.
2. To check if the problem was with media in one or the other of the two audio tracks. I tried rendering with one after the other turned off, and received the same error message both times.

I have about 1 gig of RAM, and am rendering to a USB drive with about 80 gig free. I've also setup Vegas to write its temp files to this drive.

I can't believe I have really stumped everybody. Well, here's another hint. Today I deleted all of the audio events from both tracks, and re-tried "render to DVD". I ended up with about a 1.7 gig mpg that plays just fine in Window media player, and a 0.5 gig wav file that also opens in Window media player and also plays just fine, altho silently.

I would go back to the last stage of the project that rendered ok, and redo the last set of edits, but I am hesitant to spend the time and end up with the same problem. I'm hoping someone will give me an idea of what can go wrong when importing and including media files that could cause the error I am getting.

Thanks for any help.

You could try an audio .wav render only under custom and see if that renders correctly. If it does then render using the template for dvd architect mpeg2 video only. The wav render should only take a couple of minutes so try that first. Good Luck

Thanks for the suggestion. I ended up solving the problem by upgrading to Movie Studio Platinum after poking around here and finding I had a reasonably-priced upgrade path. During the installation it asked that I download and install MS DirectX. Thought I already had it, but perhaps somehow the computer "lost" it. At any rate, either installing DirectX or VMS Platinum did the trick, as now the render goes fine.

Of the 2, I'd guess it was a DirectX issue, but you would have been notified if it was missing any time you went to update WindowsXP.

So unless Auto Updates are off (as mine are), and you seldom update Windows XP manually, this should not have been missing from your rig.

I've not even taken the leap to Service Pak 2 yet - got the idea somewhere that it caused issues. Looks like I should just go for it, because the "lost" DirectX sure was an issue.

Toners, I'm having the same problem. Large .avi files are fully rendered to the hard drive by Video Factory, but when opened with any program (media player, MyDVD, etc.), they are shorter than the full length of the movie. The movie ends about 1/3 of the way through. The file size on the disc appears to be appropriate for the full length of the movie. If you or anyone has a solution to this problem, please let me know. To check for corrupted data, I rendered a short loop section that included the location where the movie stops, and this works okay. I also rendered only the last half of the movie, and the file still stops at exactly the same time duration as when the movie is rendered from the beginning. I have 512 meg of Ram and plenty of space on my hard drive. Is there a maximum .avi file size limitation somewhere?

By the way, the movie stops at 4min 42 seconds, which correspondes to a file size of precisely 1.00 gb. That's why I suspect there is some maximum file size setting somewhere that I cannot find. Thanks
