Errors in HDV capture

Hello,
I have captured some HDV material. When I put it into the timeline, some of the frames in the timeline show up as red. Does this mean there were errors in the mpeg2 stream? When I render it out, there is some black video during playback when it gets to the area in the timeline with the red frames.
Could these errors be caused by the tape?
Thanks

John Schell

You did not tell us HOW you captured the video and with WHAT or if you converted it to an intermediary for editing / display on the timeline. To check the tape and your method capture some more HDV and try again.

John,
The red frames do indeed indicate errors. As Michael asked, what is your work flow? Any external devices/tools/hardware in the chain, or is it straight M2T capture?

Sorry about that.
I am capturing directly from the JVC HDV deck with no conversion to an intermediary. I drop the m2t file into the timeline. After Vegas calculates the peaks, a couple of the frames in the timeline show up as red.
My suspision is that these errors are from the tape. Does that sound correct?
Another device I'm using to decode the stream also shows breakup, which is likely due to these errors.
The breakups occur most of the time in scene transitions, but also it the middle of continuous footage.
Thanks for your help,
John Schell

The errors are indeed from the tape, but could also be tape head/deck problems. During a seminar in DC this week, I heard from two different users of the JVC system that they suffer an inordinate number of dropouts, although I've not used the JVC HDV deck myself. If you have another deck, I'd try capturing this way, unless the JVC tapes are 24p.
