Everybody go to REC.VIDEO.DESKTOP newsgroup and help tell the masses about Vegas Video

HPV wrote on 12/2/2001, 10:10 PM
I've been plugging Vegas Video on the rec.video.desktop NEWSGROUP for many months now. Good chance some of the new people here are the results of my posts there. With Vegas 3 ready to change DV NLE forever, lets all do what we can to promote it to the masses and make Sonic Foundry some cash. We all owe it to them.

Craig H.
PS, I'm not the one that spilled the beans there about the promotion code for the $199.00 offer. Not sure if S.F. wanted people outside the S.F. community using it.
PSS, new S.F. catalog list the reatil prices for Vegas 3 at $349.97 DL, $399.96 boxed. That's the price it needs to be to sell tons of copies. Will the web site ever be updated?

i've been sort of checking out the vegas related posts on that NG for about a year. it's really amazing... there's been a huge shift in attitudes / acceptance concerning Vegas over the past year. a year ago if you posted something about Vegas vs Premiere, the Defenders of the Adobe Empire would come out in force to deride it as a toy and huge arguments would ensue about the importance of 3rd party hardware support and the fact that premiere is an 'industry standard'. not so anymore... check out the posts about Vegas. i was absolutely shocked at the near-complete absence of the usual barrage of condescending posts. interesting :)

(i was kidding about the 'defenders of adobe'... there's no such organization... although i used to be convinced that there was. there isn't right?)

I think it was much easier to bash VV2. However, VV3 is too good to come up with too many negative things to say. In my opinion it is much better than Premiere (I used Premiere for the past two years). For DV, there isn't much of a choice unless you use Premiere with a hardware solution. Even then, you could use the money you save, but VV3 and a cheap firewire card and use the leftover cash you would have spent on Premiere and a hardware card on something else. I don't use Adobe anymore. I tried VV back during the summer and found myself using it more than Premiere. However, after VV3 came out, I uninstalled Premiere. No need for it anymore. DV output in VV3 is incredible and the built-in MPEG code is terrific. I think the Adobe fans are having a hard time justifying why Adobe is better than Premiere when it isn't.

How do I get to that newsgroup? I'd be happy to check it out and to brag some about VV.

:)

news groups are probably the best place to get info on the internet and yet so many people don't use them. okay, here's the quick version.

first, get a news reader. (Free Agent, Netscape (built in), MS Outlook) then contact your ISP and find out what your news server is. they will have instructions somewhere to set it up properly in your news reader. then get a fresh groups list, and find rec.video.desktop

you may be able to find web-portals to the group too, but it's much better to have a news reader.

please observe posting guidelines so you don't get flamed ;)

first thing you should read on the news group is the faq. just search on FAQ and you'll find it.

have fun.

I would be glad to brag about VV3 as well in that newsgroup. I am a video/film student in Milwaukee(yes, they do have a film department. lol), and I first got a copy of Premiere to try out... I hated it. My college is MAC based, so we learn on Avid Xpress and i'll be touchin upon Final Cut Pro my last semester. Problem with that is, I cannot stand MACs.. people tell me its much better for video editing, but I grew up on PC and will deal with the PC and its available software. I used soundforge alot and decided to give vegas video a shot and fell in love with it. VV3 is even better. Long live sonic foundry! (are there any openings in the company...i need a job after I graduate next year. hehe)

Thanks for the update on newsgroups. I'm pretty familiar with using newsgroups, I just don't know the server for rec.video.desktop. I use Microsoft and devx newsgroups now.

Thanks,

Tom

hmmm sorry... well maybe that will help someone else get started. my news servers have always had (virtually) all the groups... i don't know what i'd do without the rec. and alt. groups. i'm on verizon's news server and i subscribe to supernews as well which has better retention. i've found a web portal to the group through ZDnet or something too. hope you can find it!

thanks for letting me know that GG. Got any specifics? lol. I would really like to back my case up in class when everyone gets "anti-PC" on me..

I'd appreciate it =)

Has anyone posted on www.dv.com in their NLE section? I like that site. Great audio forum moderated by Jay Rose. His book on audio for DV is insightful. And he, as a moderator is all over the questions.

Well, I just spent a few hours there amd made quite a few posts. But I had enough. Too many newbies and cowboys that just want to attack for debates on opinions. Too many amateures and and questions I have discussed numerous timess for years.

Holy Crap, 50+ post today about Vegas. I think both you and Tunaboy learned some new stuff. I hope you will check back in from time to time. You don't need to answer everything in a day, spread it out over a few days if you need. As you saw, except for Tunaboy. most are way into learning about how cool Vegas is. Heck, even he said he would spend some more time with the Vegas 3.0 demo.
So S.F. - any chance of getting 4 32K DV audio streams implemented in a future upgrade? Sounds cool for all those Canon XL1 users. Sure would pounce the Canopus Storm users, seems that's the the only thing they could really claim over Vegas. Besides RT DV output.

Once again, good job Gary. You are a trooper.

While we are on it though, I would like to see real time audio with video over the firewire during preview on ext monitor.
---------------------
Gary, you should see how well my Geforce MX 2 video card does with twinview S-Video output. Full screen Draft is very usable to keep the framerate up, preview looks just like DV output with a higher framerate than OHCI outuput. It isn't fields (frames only), so I use external OHCI for checking graphics and such. Plus I can drop to 360x240 to check timing at 30Fps on tricky stuff. Do you use a laptop only?

Just get an Intel tattoo. Whenever anyone mentions a Mac, pull up your sleeve and stare them down like a maniac until they leave the room.

They won't talk about macs when you're in the room anymore.

Of course it could hurt your job prospects.

But hey! Macs do SUCK! Tattoos for everyone!

That newsgroup "wwww.dv.com" needs to hear from all who post in this forum. They seem completely unenlightened about VV3 and think its a wannabe Premiere. Perish the thought!

Just let them know that Lucas Arts just bought a bunch of new dual Athalon 1800 mp units to finish the new Star Wars project.
