EX-1 Newbie: Vegas 8.0c File Handling

I will be editing some EX-1 footage for a shoot coming up in May. I do not have any files yet for testing.

Can I drop the native .MOV files on the Vegas 8.0c timeline and edit? I read in the 9 release notes that it handles EX-1 material natively. So does 8 also?

This will be mixed on the timeline with native AVCHD and HDV footage.

Thanks.

No, you cannot drop the native MOV files on the timeline. You need the BPAV folders intact, then you use the Sony Clipbrowser (free download) to extract the files as MXFs which Vegas can understand. This is a re-wrap and not a transcode, so no quality is lost.

The EX1 does not create MOV files.
You need to run the mp4 files through the free Clipbrowser and Export For NLE as MXF. Then V8 will handle the footage.

Make certain you are handed exact images of the cards i.e. the complete BPAV folder(s).

I will be copying the files to my laptop at the venue. So just insert the card in that crazy large port on the side of the laptop and move the card directory to a folder (i.e. Cam1/Card1/XXX)?

1. What is the extension of a actual video file before rewrapping?

2. Does this file play back in VLC Media Player for review?

3. Is it a bad idea to delete unwanted files before running clipbrowser?

4. Does Vegas handle the native files after clipbrowser at least as speedily as AVCHD files?

Thanks!

1. mp4
2. Yes but it'll also playback in the Clipbrowser
3. YES.
4. Depends on project settings. I regularly do multicam edits of mixed HDV and EX. I can get one or the other to playback well but not both.
Your approach to copying cards is correct. I create a folder for each card as you've said.
Once you've converted to MXF technically you no longer need the card image but I hang onto them or at least archive them offline, just to be sure, to be sure.
Where it gets messy is if you video that spans cards. V9 cannot handle this correctly. You still have to use the Clipbrowser to merge the chunks into one MXF for Vegas to handle it.
