That is the most recent of the series on "Stunning Good Looks", as I'm sure you're aware! Since the hot filter built into the camera cuts IR (cuts wavelengths longer than 720nM) I'm satisfied the testing is showing that the non-black blacks problem isn't IR contamination, but just sensitivity to far red. Art's exploration of the fabric store is pretty much proof of that: http://provideocoalition.com/index.php/aadams/story/using_the_nd_90_filter_as_a_preproduction_tool/seeing the problem by eye[/link]

Oh great!
When I was a kid we had McCarthy looking for Reds under our beds and now we'll be snooping stores looking for Red's in our threads.

Lol! Art would love that one.

I'm hunting around Facebook because I'm convinced Art explained the issue to me somewhere...I was a little critical because an article of his started this topic off without any sort of introduction of the issue. Otherwise I like his writing and ought to go back through the entire blog.

The general idea as I understand it is that since the EX1 and EX3 are sensitive to near red wavelengths you can find find blacks not really recorded as black.

The fabric story illustrates that certain fabrics will reflect more near-red to the camera and show as not-quite-black.

Both Art and Lenny are friends and people I used to light for. I learned a lot from over the years and it's gratifying to see them both still as smart and inquisitive as I remember. Definitely the right D.P. spirit in these guys.
