When I try to import a .avi(HD) file into vms 9 platinum, I get the following error:

The file I am trying to import is not from a camera, I downloaded it from a web site, and it plays with windows media player, or vlc media player just fine, so the file is not corrupt. It is 48MBytes.

I am running windows vista 32 bit with all the latest updates and service packs, and have 3GB of RAM and about 100GB of hard drive space remaining. This is the only type of file I have had this problem with so far. Can anyone help?

Download MediaInfo and post the full details of your file.

And that explains your problem.
You will need to download and install the free x264vfw codec from here (Sony can't include open-source codecs in their commercial software):

I clicked on the link you provided, but there's a whole list of files. I don't know which one to download. There's no download button, and when I right clicked to 'save target as' , it was going to save it as html.

I hope you cover that in the tutorial, I am off to read that now. Thanks again, hope this works.

So I was able to download and install the codec. I read the tutorial, watched the video. It still doesn't work. Same error. I'm wondering how this is the x264vfw codec. I see 2 different codecs spelled out in MediaInfo. Under "General", it says codec ID: mp42, and under "Video", it says codec ID: avc1.

I'm confused..Help !

Did you reboot your machine so Vegas can see the new codec?

If all else fails, upload a short sample of your video somewhere.

The video codec is AVC. The wrapper is AVI. You need the x264vfw video codec in order to see the files in Vegas.

The General flags are probably what it was before it was converted by whatever downloader you used.

I didn't know I was supposed to re boot my machine, but I turned it off over night, as I usually do, and I just tried to import the file into svm again with the same error. 2 questions if you don't mind. first is, where do the codecs go when you install them ? Is there some kind of 'codec library' in the computer?, and secondly, in my svm preferences, the box to "ignore third party codecs" is checked, along with the box "Use Microsoft DV codec". I didn't want to mess around with the preferences if I could avoid it, but as I explore more and more, I am becoming more curious. Should I uncheck the box to "ignore third party codecs"?

The codecs are .dll's, not the kind of thing you (or anyone) needs to concern yourself with. If you installed it correctly, it's loaded.

The DV codecs are likewise not involved in this, but you really shouldn't be using the MS DV codec because it's not wonderful.

Looking at your error message more closely, it seems you may need to convert your file using a third-party utility, or do your downloading in a different format.

Again, instead of guessing at a bunch of stuff that is not germaine to your situation, please upload a clip somewhere and let us have a look at it. Until then, further speculation on your part or mine is not going to be productive.

Thank you musicvid, dynamic link libraries, right, I would rather not be concerned with them. As far as my downloading, I right clicked on the file and clicked "save target as" and directed it to my folder.

I dont know how to split this movie into a "clip", since I cannot move it into either smvs, or pinnacle, which I have installed on another system. Another thing I just realized this morning, windows media player does not know how to play the file. Only vlc media player can play it, for whatever that's worth. I didn't realize that before, because I usually just use vlc media player to play everything. It doesn't complain like wmv does.

I then watched your tut video again, where the kid talks about renaming files, figuring that I would rename it .mp4 instead of .avi, since vlc media player is especially good at playing those 2 types of files. After the usual complaining by Vista, it changed the name, and when I double clicked it, it worked, as expected. However; smvs would still not accept it. There's one more thing I am going to try. I have a suspicion that this experiment will either verify or dismiss my suspicion. I will re-post when I have concluded the experiment and fill you in on the details. Thank you for your help.

Sorry, I've been away for a few days. I was coming back to the forum this AM to update you. I originally downloaded the video from usenet, but according to mediainfo, there should be a youtube link. I would like to find that. Never thought of it. Get the original and see what it really is.

Well, the AVI you got from a newsgroup was converted from something originally on youtube. That means the original youtube version is of no use in solving the problem with opening your file. If you are uncomfortable with sharing the content publicly, then there are ways for you to download it directly from youtube without my personal involvement. Good luck to you.

It was you who expressed concerns about your video content, not me. You probably don't realize that many people here do video work professionally. And the professionals here are always glad to help out -- but without the games. Maybe someone else will be able to help, and I hope you get your problem solved.
