Exception Error/Unable to Assign Links

kdi001 wrote on 8/21/2007, 7:46 AM
I'm having two problems right now; perhaps they are related.
I recently installed DVDA 4.0b, thinking it would correct the problems I was having with version 3, but it hasn't:

I keep getting error messages at varying times when working within the program (An exception has occurred....) and then the program locks-up and closes. I posted the error message below.

Also, when I try to assign something (certain footage) to a particular button on my main menu, it doesn't take effect. As soon as I assign something to a button and highlight some other button, I still keep seeing the red-colored open/empty link notice---ithe command isn't holding for whatever reason.

Like I said, perhaps both of these problems are related. My other Sony software is working just fine.

The exception may or may not be related to a bug Sony mentioned in this thread. If so, uninstalling and re-installing DVD Architect might do the trick. That was 4.0a, though, and I'd assume they'd fixed it in 4.0b. Like most exceptions, though, it could be caused by any number of things -- including faulty RAM, malware, or device driver issues.

My gut instinct is that the link issue is not related. When you say you're trying to assign links to buttons, what steps are you taking? Although it is possible to add button and then assign media to it, the general workflow is to simply add media to a project and let DVD Architect create the button. That way, you're more or less guaranteed to have an established link.

Or do you mean changing the thumbnail for a button that already links to a piece of media?

Thanks. The "This Thread" link doesn't work, though.

As for my other problem, I am using the button properties section to assign active media to a button, but it doesn't seem to "hold" or take effect once I click on something else. I seem to recall being able to assign media by doing it this way before.

P.S. I removed version DVDA 3 in Add/Remove of Control Panel after installing version 4. Was this the proper way---just in case the problem was with the old version?

What is the proper way to remove an older version before installing a newer one? I seem to recall that some other thing, other than the main program (DVD-A), also has to be deleted in order for a "clean" install of a program.

Each version of DVDA does "clean install" all by itself. It doesn't use any of the folders, subfolders, or registry entries of any previous versions. In fact, you can leave an old version installed, and it will have absolutely no effect on the new version.

I used to keep DVDA 1, 2, and 3 on my system just so I could reference any one of them when answering questions here. Eventually, though, the questions on versions 1 and 2 stopped coming. ;) At any rate, I experienced no problems as a result of having all three versions. And when I uninstalled the old ones the standard way (Winows' Add/Remove Programs), they were gone for good.

I figured that much. ;-) But what steps did you take -- how did you add the button first? Which tab of the Button Properties window did you use? Which property did you set? Where is the video that you tried to assign?

Gary Kleiner (on his Vegas tutorial DVDs) suggests deleting Vegas, Microsoft SQL Desktop Engine, and Media Manager (in Add/Remove) for a clean reinstall of Vegas---so I wanted to ask what, if anything, should be deleted to reinstall DVD-A. You answered it; thanks.
