Existing pcm/wave audio to 5.1

I'm trying to understand how to do the 5.1 mixing with a soundtrack from a vhs movie. can you make this audio into a true 5.1? i noticed that there is only 1 audio track in vegas, when i do my dv capture. can you take a pcm or wave and create a six channel soundtrack from it? the manual doesn't really cover this.

How would you describe "true" 5.1? You can send the same stereo info to all six channels using the surround panner and thereby "fill the space", but that's the limit. Any other form of pseudo-surround (filtering out center material on rear channels, adding compression to center channel etc) would be up to your choice and ideas, there's no standardized way AFAIK.

there is a scene in which horses are running from the right to the left. when i play the vhs back in a vcr, you can clearly hear the hooves hitting the ground from the right to the left side. however, when played back in DVD ac3, there's no distinction. I'm new to this, so i trying to find out what i can do.

if you captured in stereo and rendered with the stereo audio track in one channel, panned front center, you should still hear the correct playback.

if you put the stereo audio(captured audio) in multiple tracks in the 5.1 mix, like one in the left and one in the right, you're going to lose your stereo effects.

you could probably put the stereo track panned center in the front speakers, turn off the center and surrounds, place a copy of the track panned center all rear(turn off fronts and center), and you may come lose to what you're looking for.
