experiencing major performance issues with VMSP 9.

I am having major performance issues and experience frequent crashes with movie studio platinum 9.0. It happens after I import any kind of media file whether it's video or audio and regardless of particular formats or file sizes. I can import a 3 MB music file or a massive 1 GB video file, and I get the same behavior. The main thing I notice is that every 5 to 10 seconds my cursor will really slow down, and feels as if I'm trying to move it through a viscous substance like molasses. Then a few seconds later the mouse movement returns to normal, and then 5 to 10 seconds later it once again slows down. It constantly does this and the whole program will crash quite frequently. I have an Intel I7 processor with 12 GB of RAM and Windows 7. If I open the task manager to check CPU usage when my cursor slows down, usage is at or below 10%. So it does not seem to be an issue with my PC. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Do your project settings match your source footage? This is particularly important if you are editing AVCHD footage.

If your footage doesn't match your project settings, your timeline will require frequent pre-rendering. And, if you don't rendering it, it will move like molasses in January.

It could also be other issues, of course. You don't say if you're editing on your C drive or from an external drive and, if the latter, if you've ensured that your drive is formatted NTFS.

Computers also frequently get gunked up with tmp files -- even brand new ones, which collect thousands of tmp files just setting up! Running a program like Advanced System Care from iobit can often put the zing back in your system.

I removed a bunch of temporary files and that seemed to help a little. However I still am having a lot of problems with the project I was working on. All I'm trying to do is edit an MP3 file that is less than 10 MB in size. I start with a blank project and as soon as I import the file and it appears in the project media window the whole program slows down. Not only that, but usually within a couple of minutes after importing the file I get an error message telling me that the program must close. I don't think this has anything to do with making sure the project settings match the source footage. However I have not tried it yet. I'm not sure exactly how to do that.

Also, I am editing it on my primary internal hard drive.

I think I have isolated a major source of the problem. As I should have expected, it doesn't work well with other resource intensive programs. I am constantly using a speech recognition program. I have a disability that requires me to use a nearly hands-free input system. It takes a lot of effort to move the mouse across my very wide display. Vegas is now running much more smoothly when the sr program is not active, but now that means I can't really use it. Any suggestions on a workaround?

Both potential solutions are probably not perfect....All in involve some cash

Just guessing at a few options...A orbit/trackball version of a mouse where you just have to use your fingers; if you are comfortable writing, a pen/tablet could also be used. Another much more expensive solution...a touch screen monitor?

Not sure if any will work for you, but thought that I would make the suggestions just in case you hadn't already considered these.
