Satish's plugins have an exploding modus. Like breaking glass where you can control the amount of debris and how high it will fly before it lands. I've used it on text. But i don't know if that's what you're after.

You might also want to try Ulead Cool 3D 3.5 or Cool 3D Production Studio (depending on your budget). Both are really good at 3D shattered/exploding text effect.

You can use Boris FX or Red to apply an explosion effect to a track with the text.

I've used the Satis explode with great effect, used it to change text, explodes out from one price and then collapses back as the discounted price. Just make two clips the same but with the different text, run the final one in reverse and cross fade at the midpoint. Adding a little motion blur also helps.

Cool 3d 3.0 can be had at ebay for less that $20 and it has many different exploding text options. Very easy to use. After it is finished in Cood 3D, export as TGA files and bring them in as a still image sequence in Vegas.

Yes, I think Satish's tools work great for this. You can either use Shatter 3D or even the Particle Generator of Wax to do things like that.
