Explorer Crashing When Opening Folders With Mpegs

MUTTLEY wrote on 1/22/2004, 1:37 AM
Don't know what the deal is but its driving me nuts. Been around the net and back looking for a solution and have come up empty handed. You here, dear members of the forum, are my last vestiges of hope.

If a folder has a few mpegs in it and thumbnail preview is on, when I open the folder its toast. Tried turning off thumbnail cashing, but I gotta have the thumbnail. Also playing mpegs with Media Player tends to crash it if I try to fast forward. These are the things I've noticed.

Anyone who has a clue what I'm talking about or has trodden down this path, would love ta hear from ya.

How do you go about showing thumbnails?

I thought you must have been talking about Bins and their sub folders? I repeated this in Bins and got thumbnails. Didn't crash. I repeated this in Exporer - no thumbnails . .please tell me how you did this? Otherwise I don't crash out either . .

Thumbnails in Explorer please . . then I'll test it for yer!

Don't think I was clear enough, this is not in Vegas, it's just in Windows when dealing with mpegs. Should have been more clear and perhaps put the " OT " in the heading.

Sorry guys, didn't mean ta make you chase your tails.

Ray, no problemos! I've gotta a very short tail!!!

So, it's within WMP. As I say I can get MPEGS play and show thumbnails . . as you would hope . . BUT, I can't Fast Forward . . hmmm...

Sorry for the late reply.

Not sure what the deal is. I'm guessing its not to common cuz I'm pretty good at tracking down a solution and through all of my searching have come up emptly handed.

I can say it sucks. Sometimes when looking for a vid clip going through the normal Windows explorer and looking at thumbnails is easier than loading a clip in Vegas, and like I said, if I go into a folder with mpegs in " Thumbnail " view, it crashes explorer. Now it isnt a huge crash, just the winow I'm looking at. None the less its aggrivating, more so cuz I seem to be the only one !

Could it be that somewhere along the line I got a different codec ? And if so, how do I check and/or replace ? This is about the only thing I can think of. It does seem to be mpeg specific, I can open a file with tons of pics or avis and see the thumbnails no prob.

It IS fairly common. Windows XP explorer (set View filmstrip or thumnails) will attempt to open and display the first frame of MPEG's and attempt to play MPEG files if double clicked.

The problem is if the file is corrupt or needs some odd ball CODEC it will more often than not crash and burn. This is also true of other applications like ACDSEE that also can crash when attempting to open some MPEG files. At least that program has a option to disable opening certain file types, while lame Windows isn't as intelligent.

That all said no one application can open everything. Vegas is pretty good and can open some MPEG's others can't, then again it can't open them all while VirtualDub for example will but it can't handle the rendered version of Vegas MPEG-2.

Aren't computers fun?

Thanks for the info Billy, your a veritable plethora of information. Luckily, Vegas handles all the files and formats just fine. Its ony when going into a folder through Windows, or if attempting to 'fast forward' an mpeg while viewing with Windows Media Player that I get a crash.

Appears as though I'm S.O.L.

The thing with a lot of the fast forwarding is keyframes. I'd imagine the DVDA template produced ones you can move around in OK but I used to work on a lot of WMV files that only had one keyframe at the beginning. Even trying to edit them in Vegas was impossible.
Solution was to re encode them with WME and add keyframes every 2 seconds. Sure blew up the file size though.
