Good point Erni, a bit to generic to be of use to others.
Anyway, after clicking Explorer in Windows returned to Vegas Pro 11 (521) and all's well.

Sorry about the generic title. I've edited the first post, but it won't let me change the thread title.

It seems that the issue was completely unrelated to Vegas. My dvd media was faulty, which was slowing down and even locking up the explorer window in Vegas.
