Explorer window freezes the whole Vegas...

I got this bug: when I'm into Explorer window and watch my clips, if I hit the spacebar to pause (I chose this in prefs) everything freezes. Same if I double click on the name of the clip in Explorer (before it's finished playing in Preview window) to open it in Trimmer . Then I get this charming hour-glass popping and staying there 'til I close everything . Menu bar has disapeared at this point.
My task manager says: Vegas = no answer.
It will freeze forever (been waiting a *long* time just in case it was my computer that was somehow slowed down).
I can only go this way: hit the upper right "x" sign that brings me to close the program through task Manager then I lose the last clips I placed on the timeline and I have to restore, rename, etc...
It's been doing it more than ten times now in the last days.
I restored my system to "two weeks ago".
I installed V4.0e and, having the same problem again, used the "repair" option.
No success...

Is there a solution to this? (I ask cause what's coming to my mind right now is pictures of a chainsaw, a pack of dynamite in my tower, acid poured on the whole system, giving this computer to my stupid neighbour, sending it to Mars on the next flight...)

Thanks.

Are you using a Firewire HD? That could be the problem. If so, try to move your clips to an internal HD and perform the same operations. If it now suddenly works you need to get an internal video drive or try another FW HD. Search this forum for lots of Firewire HD recommendations.

Other than that, I have no idea at this point.

I had the same thought before going to bed last night and tried exactly that but the problem is the same with internal drives.
I've been scanning my computer this morning with antivirus app (just finished...) and there were 2 trojans in my system. It may be that.
Otherwise, I found a site where all the background programs are listed (and explained) and reduced my backgrnd apps to 20 now (when not using InternetExplorer) so I'll be trying again with this "minimal" setup.
Otherwise, my fear is that my registry base has been altered...

Thanks for your feedback storm. , you had a logical suggestion even if I didn't mention I used ext. hard drive; hats off to you ; ) !

Let me say up front that I don't believe this has anything to do with Vegas:
I've been having these freezes for 5 months now (since this particular (fast) system was first built) and support has always pointed to my system (or at least all of the suggestions were related to something else going on in the background). After jacking with it until I could jack with it no more, I reformatted the OS drive and have nothing installed except for V4d and DVDA. I still have the same problem. However, I got an error on boot up a couple of times stating my DDR memory was not perfectly matched and should be if I want to run Hyperthreading. I disabled HT but still have the problem. I paid BZBOYZ.com extra to make sure they were matched but.... we are very slowly negotiating trading it out but in the meantime I'm wondering if any of you feel the memory could be the problem even when not in HT mode. BTW, when my V4 freezes it will sometimes snap out of it after a minute or two.
Sorry this post is so long but I do feel much better now after whining about it.
TIA,
Randy
