exporting audio to wav

I can't seem to separate the audio from video in order to save it as a .wav file and burn on an audio disc. When I right click the audio and open the audio in my audio editor, it is in an .avi format, which will not play in any of my audio editors, and I don't know how to convert it to a wav file. Has anyone done this yet?

You have to use the Advanced Render option. Go into Make Movie / Save it to your hard drive / Advanced Render / Save as type:=Wave (Microsoft) (*.wav).
