Exporting frames to TIF files, then back again...

LarsHD wrote on 9/13/2009, 2:03 AM
Hi,

1.
I want to export 10 seconds of 1920x1080 uncompr avi footage to prodce a number of TIF8 or TIF16 1920x1080 still image files.

2.
I then want to batch process these in CS3 PhotoShop and then import the 297.6 image files back into Vegas 9.0b as footage again. Now with the PhotoShop process applied to all the frames.

3.
Is it possible to do this?If so, how please? ( I know how to do the stuff I wnat in PhotoShop but I'm unsure about how to go about export/import w Vegas).

Best & thanks in advance
Lars

long time since i did this, but i exported to png (sony likes a nice png), batched frames through some cs4 filter combination or other, imported back to vegas (i think it was 7, or maybe even 6. in oal land it worked with no problem....

why tiff of all things?

HI. THanks. TIF only to avoid any unnecessary new compression. Just for better quality...

From Wikipedia: "Portable Network Graphics (PNG) is a bitmapped image format that employs lossless data compression."

File - Render As - Image Sequence.
TIFF is one of the options.
BTW, this is yet another of the new options in Pro 9.0.

hi mike!

you cooling down while we're warming up - or has climate change evened us out?

didn't know about the tiff option. have you tried them and does vegas play happily?

it's been my (limited) experience that i haven't ever suffered a problem using png's in vegas (i trans my nef files from my nikon direct to png and have no problems zooming ina nad around them. psd's were ok, but very slow, jpg's ok as well , but my trust in png's came from a few problems encounter with client jpg files - no idea why but my only ever serious problems were cause by humble jpg's?

anyway, as pointed out they're lossless, and can carry an alpha channel that vegas has no problems with at all.....

Import - Media.
Browse to the folder containing the 297 images, click the first one, click the "Open still image sequence" box at the bottom of this tab, click "Open", make any changes (field order, etc.) in the box that comes up and press OK.
This will show up as a sequence in Project Media that can be dragged and dropped anywhere you want/need.

Hi there Leslie.

Yes, we are slowly cooling down but the past few days have (probably) been our Indian summer.
Daytime temps in the mid 20's with overnight lows in the mid teens (heck, that was our summer weather!!!) makes working outside a pleasure.

Like you, I've never been a big fan of TIFFs either.
My understanding is that they make a call to QuickTime for each and every frame.
Anything I scan gets saved as PNG and digital stills get converted with IrfanView.

Interesting thread in that it made go do some research on just what tiff is. Much more complex than I thought. I'm regularly sent faxes as tiffs and at first they really threw me as they contain multiple pages. Tiff started out in that very arena and it seems it's still used for that as it's very efficient. Certainly pays to read the wiki, tiffs can even contain jpeg images and vector graphics. Most readers it seems only read baseline tiffs which might explain why some do not work too well with Vegas and the QT decoder.
