If you're filming in DV, render as DV. Then, when you're done with your project you should "Print to Tape" to at least have a backup of your finished project. If you have audio/video output and/or S-Video on your DV camera, hook up your VCR to the camera and record while you print to tape -- or record later from your DV camera to your VCR. This will give you the best quality on your VHS tape.
You could also record through your camera to VHS tape after prerendering the timeline, but on my Athlon 1800 the video's a little jumpy.
i connected to mini-dv (sony pc5) and went thru the "print to dv" steps. it prepared the video but an error came up at the end that says "an error occurred while creating the media file". i tried again on another file and the same thing happened. any idea what the problem could be?
Where is it generating the media to? Could it be generating to a drive that is full? There are MANY places where you need to change the "default" location. This particular one is located under File - Properties where you need to change the "Prerendered Files Folder" and make sure you check the box to make this the default for ALL new projects.
i'm on 3.0 (build 76). changed the defaults as noted. i was finally able to print. the problem could have been the wrong setting on my dv cam. i was set to "record" as usual, and vegas wants to record to the general "play" setting.
i was not able to print thru the dv cam to vhs. connecting from the 1/8th inch av out to rca ins on the vhs. maybe the dv cam (sony pc5) doesn't allow that. so i might just have to print from dv to vhs.
Hook up a monitor to your VCR outputs. I assume you are using the camera to transcode the firewire signal so put it in PLAY mode. Play the timeline and mess with the camera settings until you can see the image on the monitor. If you can see the image on the monitor then the chain works so if you PRINT TO TAPE the VCR will record it.
