Stutch,
It's fairly easy to set up any generic control surface, and the Tascam can behave as one, but it's probably a bit kludgy right now, unless you want to take a while to assign. I've got a 424, and it took some time to set up. That said, using any MIDI controlling device works great. I've even programmed my M-Audio Radium keyboard to control Vegas volumes and pans. I didn't take it any farther than that though. It's easy, just takes time to have Vegas learn each control and it's parameters. Any envelope can be programmed.
On my rig ,,When the tascam Us 428 is on I can't capture video,,When I turn it off I can capture video,,simple,,,, I'm not very happy with the way vegas jogs fwd or rew,,,,, I think the update concerning control surface support did (me) more harm than good... It's not very stable ,,slow to respond ,freezing,, I'm not intrested in spending my time fixing these nuances,,, I'm back working with vegas 4 and other software programs that are incredibly more intuitive,, Maybe it's just me but I never was happy with the overall performance or Acid 4.0 ,,SF 7.0, CDA 5 and vegas after updating them to sony,, the overall performance of these apps (for me ) worked better prior to the updates,, I find myself reverting back to the older versions (SF),,basically ,I 'm slowly finding myself not using Sony produts,,,,
That's not a Sony issue, that's a computer issue. Sounds like you've got resource allocation problems. This is quite common, and happened A LOT in the early days of video editing. It's bound to raise its head for some folks when they add hardware (or software) to some systems.
As far as your other comments....if that's your experience, then that's your experience, but I'd have to see some very real world comparisons and data to back that up. Having been a user of the products since day two of Sonic Foundry's existence, been an alpha and beta tester, I can tell you that your perception is not accurate. Particularly with Sound Forge, and ACID. Vegas is the first fully-Sony product to be released yet. The other two merely had splash screen changes. By no means is the software perfect, but the splash screen changes on those two products hasn't demonstrated loss in performance.
I agree with you that it"s my computer,,thinking ,,what next,,,, I'm going to do some research and do a recovery on my computer then install all my old Sf products and see where that takes me, Soundforge 7 peaks my cpu at 90-100% at times ,soundforge 6 peaks at around 15%, I've noticed a decrease in stability with the update to Acid 4.0f, Vegas 5 was a nightmare for me ,,check out some of my posts..... I've fixed many computers for friends by using my instincts and of course know how ,, I'm no pro but my instincts tell me that sony products don't get along with my computer.. you'll have to respect that. I'm more curious why, than to argue the details. There are so many variables to take into consideration in pursueing a fix......My frustration originates from the fact that ,I can't do this or this doesn't function properly etc...It's as if I have to do some major tweaking on my rig to get Sony apps working correctly.. This problem doesn't exist with other apps I've used...As stated early I'm going to revert back to Acid 4,0 ,soundforge 6 and vegas 4 along with CDA5.0 I feel its the only way to see where and when there
are conflicts,,,, In my experiences Plugin compatibility is a major concern.......
In Forge 7, are you editing destructively or non-destructively? That plays a large role. Remember, Forge 7 can work on a file similar to Vegas. Acid 4f works the same for me as 4c, so I can't comment on that one. I have 5 machines running various builds of ACID, and looking at 4.0a, it's using the CPU the same as 4.0f. I don't have any older builds of Forge loaded, or I'd look. I'm confident that Forge 7 is heavier, but at the same time, it shouldn't be that heavy. Can't compare Vegas at the moment.
I don't doubt what you are saying, I'm also curious why it would be different in terms of load. Do you have multithreading turned on or off?
I'm going to perform a recovery ,,I'll get back to you with any results,,, My last find in vegas 5 ,when trying to capture video was two balloon messages,, one saying I was low on bandwidth,, the other saying that my sony digital device is in use by another app (this is new) I isolated that to my Tascam-428,,,,, Either my computer can't handle the flow of data or my memory is tricked into thinking this,, As for soundforge,,no effects are applied .. all I have to do is insert any wave file,,either 3 sec, or 3 minutes,, and my cpu hits around 100%,, I'm not aware of multithreading on my computer, I don't have hyperthreading....
