external drive directory map -

Ok (Grazie, I know you're out there) my first external drive for capture and renders is now up and running, along with a brand new install of VV3. As I begin to fill and build this "E" drive, are there any models out there that can guide me on how to organize for long term storage and expansion? This is my first experience with this, so any help in configuring so that DV specific growth, i.e. additional drives beyond this first 120GB, directories, folders, files, etc., will be very much appreciated. Of course you do realise you are talking to the messiest IT slob out in webland - yeah?

1. I keep my VF, and now VV PROJECT files in a "Grazie Work" directory

2. I've 4 externals - sooooo . . . Capture on one and Render to another. I wouldn't think Cap and Rend to same Ext Drive is a problem. However, I would have two Folders i) Capture
ii) Render

In each folder I've got the Working Project Media stuff for each project - yes?

3. I've got a further sub folder for extraneous work e.g. MPEG1 and then MPEG2 - yes?

As to your your last statement, I've decided to "split" Render and Capture to the 2 separate externals. Grob, you'll just have to "Suck 'n See".

ONE Caveat to all this is - MAKE SURE YOU HAVE fired up your extenal/s prior to openning VF or Vegas - otherwise VF and VV gets their respective "knickers" in a twist - yes?

Oh yes - Make sure you tell where VF or VV is to place your capture stuff prior to capturing - but I guess you knew that all ready!!!!

Anything else? Hmmm . . . *.svidcap - now this is an intereszting Johhny - I've done all sorts of things with this one - but I believe these files can be anywhere - up for being corrected by others here - my project file/s seem to find the one it wants - yeah?

If you come up with any other probs - I'M HERE!!! Well mostly. Got some consultancy work this week - but I'll dip back in . . . .

I had a reeeallllly messy beginning with my Maxtor drive - which needed a bit of MAXTOR techie support - that said, I don't see you having a problem.

KEEP THEM FANS GOING! - Oh yes, do - DO use the Dell 1394 OCHI firewire 4-pin video qualified port SOLEY for DV IN/OUT - yeah? I've tried the MAXTOR firewire ins and outs but they don't seem to cut it. I'm sure if I had a bit more IT savvy I could do something.

3b. Yes, I have the whole system hot before I even boot up, let alone open VV. Just a nervous tick on my part. I did a search and believe that "knickers in a twist" may be a first. Congrats.
3c. *.svidcap - I see what you mean. I'm still rereading and rereading the whole issue(s). It just seems to work . . . the ol' bibbiddi, bobbiddi, boo thing.
3d. My Belkin PCM Firewire and Maxtor 120GB have been performing plug and play perfectly - sweet.
3e. I took your original advice and just left my Canon/4-pin/Dell/4-pin DVin-out alone, and it's continuing to perform. Your 4 Maxtors are daisy chained, right? Are you running them on external power or have you figured out the 6-pin power management?
3f. Your invite is soooo . . . inviting. Just think, in a few years (with nanotech Pentium 30-somethings) you'll be able to poststream your meal and the whole world can enjoy in a virtual way! Till then, I'm stuck in snow up to my twisted knickers.

1. You can elect to put your project files [ for VideoFactory = *.vf for Vegas Video = *.veg ] where ever you want.

And are different to the ".... these plug-ins et al residing on an external for use back on "C"?? See #1. - So Grob: Plugins on C: OTHER media files wherever you wish

"Are you running them on external power or have you figured out the 6-pin power management?" - Grob, if you are referring to the firewire 6-pin, as far as I know, gives no power management. - And yes, each drive has its own power supply.
