External Hard Drive

Someone a week or so ago asked about brands of external hard drives. At that time I posted that I used Maxtor and Western Digital both seemed about the same. I now have to revise my opinion.

My second WD drive within a month has failed. This one was put into service one month ago tomorrow. The only thing it has been used for is to back up a number of final DVD files for transfer to another computer.

I now prefer Maxtor.

(For what it is worth it is covered underwarranty and they will ship a new one without a hassle. I also have been turining off the editing computer when not in use to give the drives a break. Does not seem to help at least with this drive.

There is an argument that says leave your pc running and let it go in to sleep mode. This is because any electrical object does not like heating up and cooling down. I leave my pc's all three of them running 24/7/365 days with just the occasional reboot.

I have had 10 consecutive (and concurrent) Maxtor drives in fairly heavy use and have not any issues at all.

How about Seagate...any problems?

Wasn't there some kind of tie between Seagate and WD??? I thought I was told once that Seagate products were made by WD. I could be very wrong, though. . .

Anyone??

So far, I've used both Maxtor and WD HD's. So far, I've had no problems with either brand.

So far. . .

They're all pretty good these days and they all have their runs of problems, you might as well base your decision on the colour of the case, just as reliable a guide.
