External hard drive issues with capture

I'm having trouble with utilizing my external hard drive (Maxtor-160gig). I've been capturing directly to it and the Sony Viao I'm using doesn't seem to like it. As a matter of fact, it doesn't like taking material from the machine's own D drive. The only real way for me to edit/view projects in a meanigful way is to capture directly to the C drive. The problem with that is that without anything on it beyond the operating system and Sonic Foundry software, I've only got about 4 gig worth of space. I can't work on a piece more than 5 minutes long.

The Vaio is a GRX 550 with a 40 gig hard drive.

Any thoughts?

I've seen some posts here that mentioned performance drops as your drive fills up. If your OS is at 90% (40 gigs w 4 available), it may be worth investigating. DGrob
