External Hard Drive Video Playback

Can anyone please tell me if there is somthing I have to do to my external hard Drive to play back a rendered video so it plays back smoothly...seems I have always had to transfer my video to an onboard drive so it would play back smooth.

What type of HD connection? (firewire,usb, etc)

What type of file? (SD, HD, MPEG, etc)

USB should be able to play DV files. Might be able to play HD Compressed files, but won't be able to play any uncompressed files at normal speed.
