First of all, where did you get a 500GB hard drive? The largest that I know of is a WD 250GB.

Secondly, whatever hard drive you have, just go into the disk management tab in Vidcap capture options and add a new capture folder. You should be able to select any recognized drive letter.

I can't capture to an External Drive. My Camera is 1394 and so is my Exteranal Drive. When I try to capture to my external I get dropped frames out tha wazoo. I have to capture to a dedicated internal drive then move the captured video to my external. It's a pain in the ass because it's an extra step but it works. I hope you have better luck than me with capturing straight to 1394.

500GB HardDrive. Now that's room to get yourself in trouble. I see on the site that it is $999. A bit too steep for me at this point.

Mind you, these get pretty pricey in a hurry. What they are is an array of drives in a network-attached enclosure.

Too rich for my blood.

Seriously, really BIG drives like 1,000 GB on up aren't that far off. Like maybe 4-5 years using yet another new technology

I wanna have 10,000GB storage in my Dick Tracy wristwatch sized computer by 2010.

You can buy 16 120Gb drives for the price of one of those 500GB drives, seems a bit overpriced for me. I'd just set up a raid array it would be a lot cheaper than buying one of those drives. Or just get a couple IDE controller cards and set them all up as regular drives.

Thanks for all the information guys.

As for the harddrive, I have (3) LaCie d2 500GB drives (CDW 476703). I buy them from Ken Ward (my account rep) at CDW. I pay $947 for them and purchase one about every 3 months. I do quite a bit of video editing. I also use LaCie FireWire 800 PCI Card FireWire adapter's (CDW 501261).

The purpose of this drive is portability. I travel, so 16 120GB drives would not be ideal for me.

Wow.

I thought I was pushing the envelope with 600GB of on-line storage.

BTW my latest purchase was a WD 200GB 8MB drive for all of $129 (after rebate).

Theoretically you should have no problem daisy-chaining your drive and your camera for capturing. I personally had terrible problems until I discovered it was Dell's fault--their BIOS code was screwing up the PC card communication protocol. You could, of course, capture as you say to the laptop and then transfer to the external drive, but that adds a slow and painful step in the process.
