External monitor

I am having trouble "previewing on an external monitor". I am using VV3.0c, the Canopus ADVC-100 and a Toshiba 14AF43 flat screen monitor. I'm coming out of my Firewire card to the Canopus, then RCA composite OUT of the Canopus to RCA composite IN on the Toshiba (video 2). I have also tried it into the Toshiba with an S-Video cable on Video 1, and toggling between Analog and Digital on the Canopus to no avail. I have no problem "capturing" through the Canopus or my JVC SR-VS30 editing deck - so I know the video is "getting in" to the computer w/o dofficulty, it just doesn't seem to be "coming out" correctly.

When I press and hold the toggle switch on the Canopus for 3 seconds or more, I get the color bar output on the monitor, so I'm fairly certain the hookup is working properly and is not the problem. When I press the "preview on external monitor" button, I lose the preview in the docking/editing window, but nothing appears on the Toshiba (just black). When I toggle between analog and digital, the screen on the Toshiba "flickers" so it appears the signal is getting to the monitor.

I seem to have read that perhaps the file needs to be rendered to an AVI (Video for Windows) before it can be previewed (?) and that this issue may go hand in hand with "Print To Tape". This would defeat the purpose since I bought the external monitor to view my preview window during editing and so that I could use the computer monitor strictly for the editing tabs and timeline. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Would appreciate some insight. Cheers..

Is your monitor a monitor (progressive scan) or a TV set? The ADVC-100 is
for a TV set. But I am usually wrong so don't take this info to the bank. I use
my ADVC-100 with a Sony 13 inch TV set to see how it looks on a TV, not a monitor
as there are huge differences.

I had the same problem with my ADVC-100 and the external monitor. The problem went away when I switched to an Adaptec 1394 DuoConnect card to connect the ADVC-100. I originally connected through the 1394 port on a ATI AIW 8500 DV board. Everything worked fine for capture. Not even dropped frames. It appears that all 1394 ports are not created equal.

I should have specified that it is a color "TV" and not a computer monitor per say. I do not believe it's "progressive scan" either. It is a Toshiba 14" Purely Flat picture tube, with 3 line digital comb filter - Model 14AF43. I assumed I could use the ADVC-100 with a "TV", so that's why I bought the Toshiba. As I mentioned, I get the color bar output and flickers to apppear on the Toshiba (from the ADVC-100), but not the edited content. Not sure why it isn't working the way it should.

Actualy I think its just a wierd driver issue.

I've had much the same sort of thing happen. If I start a project using internal monitor it won't always switch to external monitor. But if I start VV, select external monitor first and then put something on the timeline external preview works fine.


Windoz has a video crossbar switch sitting behind VV and I'd bet its got something to do with that. Before you freak out too much that you've done your dough try a few different methods of starting up and see what happens.

The other possibility is that the ADVC-100 gets stuck in A-D mode and the preview on ext. monitor isn't causing it to switch direction, I'd try a quick print to tape through it and see if preview works through it then.

I'm using a Belkin (with 3 Firewire ports - 1 internal and 2 external) that also has 3 USB 2.0 external ports on it. Seems to have worked OK so far and I'm pretty certain that it is fully OHCI compliant. While I haven't had any capture issues per say, I can't say I've done a lot of "outputting" type work or "print to tape" through Firewire either. I have a Pioneer DVR-104 and my second IDE hard drive running off of the internal Firewire port. Both of those are also mounted internally and connected to the internal Firwire port with Firewire to ATA / ATAPI Internal Converters featuring Oxford 911 chipsets (http://www.datoptic.com/fwint.html).

I use the remaining 2 external Firewire ports for my JVC SR-VS30 and ADVC-100. With the complexity of this configuration, I'm a bit apprehensive to change out my FireWire card unless I really have to. I can still use the Toshiba TV to view content directly recorded onto mini-dv or VHS/SVHS tapes which is pretty convenient. I will certainly explore the Adaptec though. Thanks
