External Monitor

I tried hooking up an external monitor using my VGA connect,but I have played with it for hours and cannot get it to show just what Iam editing.Rather it shows a duplicate screen of the editing software..

I use a laptop to edit on and I have every type of external connection one can think of,but I am not sure how to go about the external monitor deal,so I can view a full screen playback??

Any help would be appreciated..

If you are getting the same picture twice, it's because you have the graphics card setup as "mirroring" instead of "second display". You need to go to the properties of the graphics card and display panel, and find the option that turns the display to an "extended desktop".
