External Monitor Issue...

External monitor has been working fine for several years now via 1394 and using Win 2k pro sp4. Now I install Win XP sp2 and, without changing anything else, external monitor gives me flashing blue/white screens etc while internal Vegas monitor plays along just fine. If I re-boot to Win 2k, external monitor works fine. Re-boot to Win XP, problem returns.
Where’s the “easy fix-it” box that I'm supposed to check? Or the setting that’s completely different in XP than it is in 2k?

Search for previous posts here on curing firewire problems with SP2 on older PCs (that weren't built for SP2). Lots of stuff.

I did a search on the specific symptoms before posting the above but didn't realize it might possibly be a hardware / SP2 issue.

So I tried this...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885222

Did everything they said, to the letter. Edited the registry, installed patch, (which edits the registry) re-booted, double checked everything to make sure it all makes sense...
No change.

Then I made the following observations:
When there is only one simple clip on the timeline, it plays fine.
When more clips are added, 1394 can’t handle it.
When I switch to Vegas view, 1394 external keeps playing, or trying to, right along side Vegas window.
Effects do not show up on external screen, but play fine on Vegas window.
The plot is getting thicker.
