External Monitor/Overlay in Vegas

GMS wrote on 5/19/2001, 10:47 AM
Has anyone else experienced trouble in getting Vegas to show playback on an external monitor?. I am using a Pinnacle DC30 capture/editing board, a GeForce MX 64 meg video card. I can get Premiere to play a clip to the external monitor, and the DC30 capture card plays it through, but I can't get Vegas to play it on the external monitor. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Gary

I couldn't get it to work either until I checked the Recompress Frames box in the setup box, (dont know why this worked). Some people have been unable to get this feature working under win98se, tho the above move got it going for me..

What OS are you using?

The DC30(+) drivers implement a Video for Windows interface in the Win9x drivers ONLY. Vegas needs this interface for external monitor support.

On NT/Win2K you must have a specific plugin for your application to support an external monitor. Pinnacle supplies one for Premiere (Miro Instant Video), but not for Vegas.

Hi Steve:
I am using Win98SE as an os. I have downloaded all the new Vegas bug fixes and DirectX stuff. I can get the Video capture to see an external monitor, but not playback in Vegas. There is a device selection in the external monitor tab, one is Video for windows standard which says recompression of edited frames not available, and the other option is OHCI compliant IEEE 1394/DV, which recompression is available, but the device is unavailable. I have been thinking that this is where the problem is?. I really want to use Vegas for my work, and bought the Pinnacle DC30+ so it would do this, (as a suggestion from sonic foundry). There has to be some way to do it.
Thanks for your reply.

I doubt anyone here would have advised you to purchase the DC30+. We have had nothing but problems with this card.

You may be able to get it to work by selecting it in the Vegas 2.0d external monitor device dropdown, and checking "recompress edited frames". Make sure both your Vegas app and DC30 are all fully updated.

I had spoken to a SF tech support person while attempting to get a Dazzle AV Master card to work with the external monitor in VV. He said the AV Master card will probably never work and I might try a Pinnacle DC30 card. There are only two choices in the drop down list in external monitor, one is video for windows standard which does not support recompression of edited frames, and the second is OHCI compliant IEEE 1394/DV which says, this device supports recompression, hot pluggable device and device unavailable. I am at a loss here and don't know quite what to try next.
Thanks,Gary

I am having a similiar problem. I have an Athlon 800 on an Asus K7V - Via chipset MB. My graphics board is a Matrox G400.
With Video Capture 2.0e, the external monitor function works with one problem, the video on the Video Caputure window plays all frames, the external is only playing 1/3 to 1/2 of the frames(10 - 15 FPS).
The external monitor function also works properly with Windows Media Player V7.0 and a video viewer sent out with a Blockbuster advertising CD.
With VV 2.0d I can output through my Sony Digital 8 camcorder using the firewire port. But I have no luck outputing through the Matrox board. For the Matrox board, on the VV - Options>Preferences> for "Device:" I am selecting Video for Windows Standard.
What should "Video format" be set for?
The recompress video frames is not selectable for the "Video for Windows" device selection.

to output through an MJPEG device, you need to choose the card's preferred codec in the external monitor dialog and also set the project settings to something the capture card likes. This is different with every card, so check the manufacturer's website for reccomendations. It must be a Directshow compatible capture card and a VFW codec for this to work correctly.
