External monitor preview - intermittent

eddydde wrote on 1/26/2004, 5:52 PM
I have an intermittent problem when trying to preview using external monitor with VV4.

The message ' Previewing in external monitor' flashes on the screen for about 1 second and there is no output on the external monitor.

Other times it works perfect!

It may well be your system is sharing resources, and the stream can't keep a constant communication with the bus. Check your IRQ's and see what/who is sharing.

My other thought is maybe a dicky firewire cable?

I had the same problem using a Dell computer with a Canopus ADVC-100. After recieving many complaints (all from Dell users) Canopus purchased a Dell computer and had the same problem! Then they found that Dell 1394 system drivers in XP were different than the normal XP system drivers, so Canopus sent me an update and now it works fine. Go figure.

RedBook . . thanks for sharing . . I like it when a company doesn't test a product on one of the major suppliers of pcs . . oh, I can hear the kepyboards rattling already, "Grazie, you can't expect companies to test all pcs?!? " . . . etc etc . . .

Anyways RB, thanks for sharing what is a very, very humbling story . . can you imagine the engineer at Canopus stumbling over this one? Ooooh would love to have been there - yeah?

Grazie

My opinion is I don't think Dell really cares. They make there own silly drivers and thats the end of that.

Just as a data point, I use a Dell 8100 running Win2000 and my VX2000 for the D/A converter for external monitor. No problems.

Were it an intermittent cable, the preview wouldn't be consistent.
Regarding Canopus vs Dell...It's a Dell issue, not a Canopus issue. There is an OHCI spec, and if Dell chooses to prank with it, which they do, then it's their issue, not Canopus. Canopus just happens to have a great tech department that does indeed bust their butt to make customers in any situation happy. They've written driversets for all sorts of off-the-shelf computers that they really don't need to write, but they do it as a show of good will.
