external monitor setup and recommendation?

Hey Guys:

I've heard alot about the absolute necessity to preview your work on an external monitor. I am looking for a recommendation on a monitor (fairly cheap) and also - I have the Pyro A/V Link. Will this enable me to hook up to the external monitor - and if so, how do you do that?

I know it's alot to ask, but thanks for your help in advance.

Marc

yes, the Pyro AVLink will be just fine for connecting external monitor. To see how to do this, www.vasst.com/training/ohci.htm has a tutorial.

As far as what monitor to buy, that's entirely dependent on budget. For cheap, the JVC production monitors are very, very good.

Spot: What's your Sony recommendation for HDV editing in Vegas (to use as a single monitor. Edit and preview/colo correct). My card has DVI out.

I like the Sony Premiere 234 monitor, and the cost just dropped on them.

Hello,

OK I was going to purchase a Sony monitor tommorow for my V6 laptop.. And now I am thinking that it will not work.. I was hoping to output via firewire to my camera(FX1) and then run a component cable to the monitor(i know this is not ideal.. but for now its gives me some kind of output)
I do not think the extended monitor feature is going to help me, as my graphics adater in the laptop just cannot keep up with the demands if I try to spread it across two monitors..

So i tried just connecti the camera to the laptop firewire connection, and setting the the display device in prefernces to my firewire device.. i load up some video on the timeline and play it... i never see the video on my Cameras LCD screen.. I tried DV,HDV, external monitor and everything else i can think of..In my mind, if i cannot get the video to show up on the camera LCD, then surely my monitor will not see it coming out of the camera via component cable going into my monitor...
Am i correct here or maybe overlooking something??

Thanks,

Chakra,
If you want to save a few extra bucks you could look at:
A- Finding a demo/b-stock monitor. Ikegami lists these on their website, although I believe they're out of your price range. You might be able to find demo units at retailers like B&H.
B- Sometimes you can score new stuff off Ebay, although there's some sketchy things about eBay. Know what you're doing.

Be wary about buying used! With monitors, they get dimmer, have color shifting, and may generate extra problems (i.e. convergence) as they age.

Is the camera setup right?

It needs to be switched to VCR mode and you probably need to disable A/V input.

Hi,

Thanks Farss.. I got it going.. and just for the benefit of anyone else trying this.. here is what I had to do on my FX1 camera.. put the camera in VCR mode..go into "menu" and where the two opposing arrows are, select that menu.set A/V -DV to Off,set VCR HDV/DV to DV and of course set vegas to externla monitor(little tv icon above preview window)
Thanks Farss!!

Must answer this first. Will 1600x1200 do for HDV? Or must it be 1920x1200? I think Spot once said the latter but I can't find my notes.

At 1900x1200 the new Dell2405FPW looks tempting. At 1600x1200 CNET recomends the LaCie321, they say it's for "video editors who need precises color and shading." Anyone tried this monitor? Care to comment?

Well...to see every pixel in the vid, it must be 1900 x 1080, so that means a 1900 x 1200 monitor. Vegas 6 however, will scale it accordingly/correctly, to a lower resolution monitor. Until NAB, I was working with a 1600 x 1200 monitor, and it's worked fine for the HD stuff we've done. In other words, it doesn't HAVE to be full rez. But it is very nice to have full rez.

Hello,

Hmmm, OK thought i had everything just right...I purchased my Sony LCD.. and connected everything up..(LCD is connected to FX1 via the Component cable) I am able to see the video out of the laptop(Vegas 6) on the FX1 camera LCD, but i cannot see it at the new LCD monitor.. i am able to see it at the LCD Monitor when I Play a tape in the FX1.. But I am not able to see it playing out of Vegas through the camera to the monitor..
This has been a real struggle.. It sucks being on the bleeding edge.. Any suggestions??

OK a further update.. I dedided to try connecting the S-VHS connector from the FX1 to the new SONY LCD Monitor.and i do have video that is passing thru the camera to the monitor from Vegas 6.. the problem is that it is only 4:3.. have not seen 16:9 (except when I play the tape) So it looks at this point that you cannot use the component out as a Pass Thru on the FX1?? Can anyone confirm this working ??
I have tried every combo that i can think of on the camera I Link settings unnsucessfully..

Videot57,
theFx1 will not display output from the component out via dv in as an external monitor. I have tried all combos but it isnt possible. only when you have dv in then go out thru the 480i composite cable will you get a picture on an external display.
I m not sure if this was done for some sort of copy protection or what. I understand even the canopus 300 doesnt do HD component output from what Ive heard.
vidiot57 wrote on 5/14/2005, 11:02 AM
Hi
Thanks for responding.. So let me understand this.. So far i have only been getting a 4:3 signal from S-Video and Composite video, and no signal from the component output of the camera when using it as a pass thru device.. and that is normal ?? Can you see output from the Z1 when using the camera as a pass thru, and using the component out???
I am not sure i understand the protection it is providing, you mentioned..
Looks like I just wasted money on a monitor.. It does me no good to edit and not be able to see some kind of NTSC out..

Hello,

Ok one more update for anyone who is following my dilema.. Which i would think would be anyone who has an FX1 or maybe even Z1 and will want to use an external NTSC monitor..
Anyway I now have the pass thru working in S-Video and Composite only.. So far no Component pass thru..
Can others confirm that this is true?? And is it the same on the Z1 ??
Thanks,
Mike Moncrief

epirb wrote on 5/14/2005, 2:30 PM
yes Mike,
As far as I have expirienced there is no component pass thru. Meaning sending-DV or HDV into the firewire port on the camera-seeing that signal via the Component output.
Only playback of the camera is sent out of the component jacks. either 1080i or 480p/i
vidiot57 wrote on 5/14/2005, 2:58 PM
OK thanks,, Boy that stinks..Hoepfully a third party will make some kind of converter down the road, which will convert the signal for you.. ONE to solve this problem, and TWO. so I do not have to use the camera as conversion device...

thanks,

Spot, per your recommendation, I checked out the JVC monitors and saw models ranging from $200 to $1000. At what price point do you feel the JVC monitors are of sufficient quality for video work?

This is the JVC I use.

Check out your local prices - you are gonna be very surprised. I haven't been dissappointed . . neither have my clients!

Grazie,

What's the rest of your setup? How do you connect to your monitor? Through an ADVC-type converter, through a deck, or some other way? When I see these studio monitors in person, they seem to only have those BNC connections. I'm not even sure how one would connect a PC-based editing system to a monitor like that.

Hiyah!

Well, simply put I have an OLD Panasonic NV-DV 10000 Deck which I use as my "Mission Control Centre" . . so:

1/- Monitoring: Deck > Y/C connection to rear of JVC using input/connection "B"

2/- F/W Connection: DECK <> PC

3/- Operation: For Previewing Editing:-

* Vegas External Monitor - EDITING : Vegas > Deck > JVC ( yes I know! Complex but I do have the ACEDVio which DOES NOT allow in and out CONNECTED repeat CONNECTED at the same time. So this is the way I have to go. CANOPUS does show all elements of AV<>DV connected simultaneously - it don't work with the ACEDVio - so I don't use the AV<>DV conversion of this .. card!)

* Vegas External Monitor - CAPTURING DV : Vegas VidCap > Deck > JVC . Same set up

* Vegas External Monitor - PTT : Vegas > Deck > JVC . Same set up

* Vegas External Monitor - CAPTURING AV : Analogue VCR Deck OR TV > Vegas VidCap ( all DV enabling OFF) > JVC . Same set up EXCEPT Select IN for Panasonic Channel A1 for DV Deck

So, to summarise, I USE my Panasonic as Control Centre to pipe which way things go AND just take a Y/C out directly to the JVC. Confused? I was - I now have each and every lead labelled with an arrow showing in which direction stuff goes. My bit of advise is to arm yourself with a tiny cheap monitor to "check" signal flow at each part of the stream. This removed a lot of frustration - might I tell you! Oh yes . .remove any small children and small cute furry animals while you are doing this.

I'm sure I have a made a mountain out of a molehill ( gopherhill?) out of this - but having the ACEDVio confusing me, did NOT help. However, I now really understand better how things work. I now throw cables and connections about with casual abandonment.

So:

PC<>PANNIE Deck<> VHS VCR ALL going to the JVC Monitor

Hope this helps . .!

Grazie

Is not Grazies JVC an SD monitor - not HD? Surely no one should be putting good money into an SD monitor at this time in the game. Also it has composite inputs. Component or digital is the current recommended input, right? Or for monitoring is it usual to downgrade to be as your average client?
