External Monitor (TV)

MisterPat wrote on 9/25/2003, 3:29 PM
In Vegas V.4.0d, I cannot get the "external monitor" function to work for me. (I can't get video to pass from PC software, through camcorder to TV)
Using my Sony Digital 8 Handycam DCR-TRV340 (NTSC) connected to PC via IEEE 1394 and camera to TV via A/V output jack, I can't get the PC video to show on the TV.

I can capture from the camera to PC OK
I can view camera to TV in all modes OK

The Sony manual for this camera says it handles DV - IN / OUT via the firewire.

Am I missing something here? Would appreciate any help at all.

Thanks,
Pat

First, make sure the camera is in VTR mode. If it still doesn't work then check to see if there is a menu option that needs to be changed.

1. Do you live in Europe? The European trade unions banned the ability to pass video to/from the camera. In some model cameras, this can be changed through a software hack.

2. The Sony cameras have a menu option for AV IN/OUT. When set one way, it allows video to come into the camera from an external source. When set the other way, it lets video go from the PC out through the camera to an external device (like your TV monitor). Check this and make sure it is set correctly.

Not even close to Europe (Utopia, Florida ~ NTSC land)

I've been in and out of the menu setup 1,317 times so far, but I'll give it another shot.

Maybe I'm missing the "obvious" ! ! !

Is VTR the same as "VCR" mode?

Could there be a specific sequence I'm missing?
jetdv wrote on 9/25/2003, 4:11 PM
Yes "VTR" or "VCR" mode. I'll bet there's a menu option somewhere. OR That camera doesn't support pass-thru? I don't know that camera.

Let me try a few other ideas.

1. To enable the external monitor feature, you have to click on the TV icon directly above the preview window. You'll be able to tell if Vegas is connecting to your camera because the preview window will go black with the message "Preview on External Monitor" displayed in white. If your camera's I/O pass through is set backwards (see my earlier post), this text will flash for a fraction of a second and disappear.

2. Can you capture and print back to tape using Vegas' capture function (File -> Capture Video)? If not, then we need to troubleshoot your basic 1394 connectivity.

Hello guys,

I got the same problem. What John said is true. I tried everything. I called with Sony and they said that my camera (TRV 19e has no pass through. Ik see excactly what John said. "for 1 second flashing the text "Preview on External Monitor".

Is there something to do about it except buying a another camera? Download software?

Thanks!

You could try something like this:

TV-IN

I make no endorsement.

Here are some other links:

Finally, click here, and you will get the Google search that gives you dozens more sites:

Forgive me if I'm asking the obvious, but, when you set Vegas to preview on external monitor, can you view the output on the Digi8's LCD or in the viewfinder (if it has one)?

Can you successfully print to tape?

It would surprise me to learn that any Sony Digi8 would not pass at least the video through to a VCR or TV. Anything that shows up on the cams viewfinder/screen should be present at the Svideo or composite video outputs.

Let us know how you make out with this problem.

Good luck.

Caruso - first night my ID and password have worked on the Sony forum.

Yes, (at least in the digital cameras I tried) you'll see the firewire output in the camera's viewfinder, plus on the camera's LCD screen and on any connected output device like a TV.

I actually looked up the manual for the TRV-340, 'cause I know there's got to be a way to make this work. If it's anything like my VX-2000, the critical switch is in the VCR menu. I think AV-DV OUT should be off.

My VX-2000 has a similar switch. It has to be in one position to send input from the analog inputs out to the firewire for capture, and it has to be in the opposition setting to show stuff sent OUT from firewire for print to tape and preview.

While it varies from camera to camera once you're hooked up you should see some kind of acknowledgement in the viewfinder that the camera is accepting input/output from the source you intended. Mine simply says DV IN or DV OUT in the viewfinderdepending on what I'm doing. Your camera should have some simple switch to change from taping (actually using the camera as a camera) to whatever else it can do. That's on top of a whole laundy list of features you access from some menu. Mine for example has a odd combination that you have to change in order to pass through from a VHS recorder. You don't change the settings the camera just sits there doing nothing and telling you nothing.

Got it! Thanks a bunch.

That was the "critical" move. Works just fine now. Thanks again for all the input. Great help here at this forum.

Congratulations Pat,

For me it's not posible to lock DV-out on my Sony TRV 19e. So I'm going to look for een cheap converter or deck.
