External Monitor without On Screen Monitor Window

Is it possible to enable external monitor and not have the on screen monitor window active? It would seem that once you have set up the external monitor using the monitor window, you should be able to close it so it doesn't clutter your screen. I normally drag down so it is almost off the sreen.
If you wanted to change anything within the monitor window, you would simply open it, make you changes and close it.
Have I overlooked some setting somewhere?

Also related to external monitor, I have one or two videos for which the resolution on the external monitor is affected on the size of the on screen monitor window. On most videos, I get full resolution on the external monitor no matter the size of the on screen monitor window.

If I understand what you are asking, then I would say you must have missed those little tiny "X's" in the upper left corner of all the major control sections at the bottom of Vegas. The Explorer, Trimmer, Media Pool ... Mixer, Video Preview, etc. can all be closed by either using the little "X" or from the view menu where you will see check marks by all the views that are currently active. And also ALT+(1-9) key combinations are listed for each one.

Is this what you were looking for?

You drag it to the right, right? Like this guy said, did ou noticed the "x" ? Cause either way, you drag it completely to the right or you close the window, you get something like what you're looking for.
You "reset" those views by checking the according box in the "View" menu (up left), if you lost something somewhere ...
Santé!

I am very well versed in Windows. I know that the X closes the window. My question is when I do close the monitor window, the video to the external monitor is disabled. When I reopen the window the video is re-enabled to the external monitor.

What I have been doing is dragging the window either down or to the right to get it out of the way. What I would prefer to do is be able to close the monitor window with video still being fed to the external monitor.

When I was learning VV2, I used the docking of various windows but have migrated to configuring VV3 so that none of the dockable windows are active when I bring up VV. I have found it more efficient to bring up and close the various windows as needed. I bring up what window/s I need and when done close the unneeded ones down. I have found that it quickly becomes second nature just to select the window needed. I can open and close windows as needed faster than undocking and resizing windows as needed and it removes unneeded clutter from the screen.

"when I ...close the monitor window, (is) the video to the external monitor ...disabled? "

Yes

in it's current design, the external monitor feature is unfortunately bound to the preview window. I wish it weren't as well.

Hmm. Well, I guess I've never tried running one without the other. Sorry for the bad advice (to just use the X to close the video preview.) Oh well. Maybe SF will make this change into the next update or version release.

if you want to "hide" the preview screen, drag it back to the main vegas program (below the timeline - with the trimmer media pool and mixer) and then adjust the size of the preview until it is pratically not noticeable (you will just see the "x" and a little vertical bar - barely takes up any real estate) - just resize it when you need to get to the controls.
