external monitoring

please forgive the newbie/kindergarten request, but can someone please give me an easy to understand explanation of how i can hook up an external TV monitor (say, large plasma screen) to Vegas so I can watch the video only on a large screen, while editing/composing music along to it on my computer monitor? i've searched the forum on this topic and i think i've found some related threads, but most are a little tech for my level of ability/knowledge. i need a real step-by-step. i have a PC and Vegas 4, and i was told i need something called the canopus ADVC 300...that's about as far as i got.
thank you much in advance...and sorry again for the dumbing down.

1) Connect the firewire cable to a camera/deck/convertor that will allow pass-thru of the signal.

2) Connect the camera/deck/convertor via RCA or S-Vid to the TV

3) Click on the "External Preview" button above the preview window.

thank you. now i know where to start! i assume then that the advice i got about the canopus means it's the preferred converter among other converters out there?

You really dont need the Canopus unless you are converting analog to digital---That would be taking a VHS tape and converting it to digital so you can edit it in your computer. If you need to do that then the Canopus is excellent.
